"A wonderfully secluded and beautiful traditional' hotel. I had a one night stay at Coul House and was fortunate to get some great weather. Having walked around the extensive and well maintained gardens and then sitting on the terrace in the afternoon sunshine looking at the horses in the field at the end of the lawn, I felt relaxed and very content. The room itself was fine, not spectacular but clean, comfortable and quiet. The restaurant was competent but not outstanding: crab, tomato and fennel bisque for a starter was tasty enough but I couldn't detect any fennel. I asked for my fillet steak medium rare and it came medium well, but the cut of meat itself was excellent, generously sized and full of flavour. The peppercorn sauce was a bit thin and lifeless. Veggies and chips were good. The service was great and not intrusive. The dining room is spectacular. With a huge oil painting on one wall, views of the gardens and top quality furnishings, it's a beautiful place to have dinner. Taken individually and in isolation, I'd probably give the room and the restaurant stars each, but Coul House Hotel is greater than the sum of its parts when you include the gardens, level of service and general ambience of the place I think it deserves top marks. I wouldn't hesitate to go back."
