"What do semi-informed outsiders think of Essen, Germany? Immediately certain images pop to mind: Krupp, Thyssen, steel works and coal mines, old smokestacks dominating a grimy neglected industrial town. Some Germans still refer to the place as “Alter Ruhrpott” (freely translated: Old Mine Pit) –...not very complimentary and without much nostalgia. The spitting image of worn-out mining, steel towns like Pittsburg, or Youngstown in the States). Well, no longer so for Essen… Okay, the traces of this industrial legacy are still remembered in Essen, possibly occasionally celebrated too. But there’s also a new Essen, and surprisingly fashionable, definitely friendlier, and much greener too. On a short trip there, my hosts were kind enough to make the visit more informative, give a quick city-tour, point out the contrasts with days gone by, and toward the late afternoon, early evening took me to a rustic contrast of my industrial image of Essen. It was the “Alte Fähre” Restaurant, with a view on the river Ruhr… Well, river in parentheses, rather a gentle well-mannered brook, a stream perhaps heading, hoping to meet a river somewhere. The “Alte Fähre” is a bit on the outskirts of Essen. It’s a pleasant old, colorful farm structure. It’s more like what Germans call a “Biergarten Gasthof”, a former farm dressed-up into a cozy restaurant, and fronted by a large outdoors terrace garden. Of course, because of the balmy evening that day, I didn't get to see much of the inside, just briefly in passing, on my way to the impeccably clean bathrooms. The outside arrangements were simple long wooden tables lined up in a row in close proximity for the Ruhr River view… Of course, my hosts being German, reservations had been made and including a table strictly for our own party. At other tables around us, clearly, some space sharing was going on, on a busy laid-back evening. Be aware, this sometimes happens in Europe... But have no fear excellent way to make new friends, break the ice. The “Alte Fähre” is billed as “internationale Küche” "Küche meaning kitchen, meaning dishes from everywhere), but in fact, thankfully, many of the choices on the menu were very German. Service at this restaurant was professional, pleasant and prompt. The drinks came around quickly. I think I had a Warsteiner brew excellent. The food did even better: I only know for a fact what I had: Leberkäse (a fine ground German or Austrian meatloaf), browned in the pan, loaded with pan-fried onions and potatoes, and in my foody fantasies, sometimes plainly irresistible. My hosts had settled for local classics such as mixed endive with sautéed black pudding (pan-fried blood sausages), and a creamy chanterelle mushroom dish on homemade bread dumplings. It was all plate service, huge portions, and fresh salads served separately. As anyone who has spent time in Germany knows, the German Küche is excellent, generous, and generally not too indecent in terms of pricing either."

"This evaluation almost bleeds my heart a little. The Pizzeria Phönix at the Hingbergstraße in Mülheim an der Ruhr is relatively new, formerly the Toto restaurant was there, which is certainly still in very good memory for many students from the district. At Toto you could not go on weekends without reservation because it was full in the small restaurant. Huge pizzas, very tasty runs, I miss it. The ambience is still beautiful, there was not much changed and the tables were also discreet but tastefully covered with appetizer plates and cutlery. That looks good! When we visited Pizzeria, only one table was occupied, so it was empty. The drinks came fast, the waiter was also nice, but unfortunately not trained or attentive. We ordered and then went with nothing for 45 minutes. The appetizer boards remained untouched because there were no appetizers as they usually know in Italian restaurants. Maybe just decoration? In the meantime the side table was occupied, this round was served with an appetizer of pizza rolls, butter and olives. The fact that you should simply forget this with other guests should be noticed by the staff at the latest on the question of guests for new drinks requests, but unfortunately not happened. Beverage requests had to be expressed independently. We had to wait a total of 45 minutes for food, although the restaurant was practically empty. It was possible to note that the delivery service has priority here, because phone orders were made quickly and the deliveries were made. You can keep the guests hungry, don't worry. The food itself, in our case pizza and turmoil, was average and how to expect a delivery service. Unfortunately, this pizzeria has nothing to do with Toto from the past, neither regarding the quality of food nor the service we find very bad. We will certainly not visit this pizzeria among these operators again."

"Just idyllic! The Portuguese restaurant has not only stock bread and fish to offer, as you know from Portuguese cuisine. For the first time, you must confess that it is an exclusive top restaurant of the family. It's really a great experience to eat here. You get the dishes of the day read and explained. They are welcomed very friendly, generally the relationship between the operators of the restaurant and the guests is very close. Here you will be greeted as if you have known each other for years. They immediately notice that the proximity and satisfaction of the guests is very close to the restaurant operators. They are personally served by you and get a soothing kindness to offer that I have never experienced anywhere in this form! Also the chef, the restaurant operator, comes after the final shift and asks every guest whether everything is tasted. And FREE tastes great here, not free I love to give here the full number of stars. I have eaten a lamb risotto that has remained in memory of my tongue to this day!! And what much more much much much more is recommended and too expensive (and this is already very difficult, here no dish rises neither from the taste nor from the freshness and quality of the other everything is really delicious, is the homemade ice cream. I had and this is not excessive tears in my eyes. I've never eaten such an ice cream! Vanilla with pea seeds, Baileys with chocolate and a Himmber forest sauce, these three varieties have enchanted me! I can't even describe it, I'm not trying, you have to try. The restaurant seems quite inconspicuous from the outside, it is located on a corner on a main road directly opposite you can park on a company premises, this was told me after I had parked somewhere in a residential complex during my first visit, because I had not dared to simply drive on such a terrain. But do it! Then the way to the dizzying Portuguese is only 50 meters, the less time you lose at the slumber! Also recommended is the tapa manufacturer with anchovy! So idyllic and mediteran. I think so much. The prices are naturally adapted to exclusivity and adequacy! Great restaurant, great people, great experience and IMPORTANT EIS! Make room for Dessert!"
