"the food was good and so was the service. we enjoyed four of the small plate options and enjoyed them all, especially the skewered tofu. the small plate part size is small, so if hungry, err on the side of the order more. the restaurant is located in the second floor of a reclining and has a charm of the old world in its sensitivity. the restaurant has been in business since 1958. the service was excellent. because we don't speak French, the server called another employee (owner? who spoke our language to check if it had taken our order right. note: an article in the menu listed as smashed kichererbsen is hummus updated by previous review on 2021-10-01"

can not judge eating, but missing vegan explanations are no longer good enough for happycow imho. updated by the previous review on 2019-06-05

Service took over an hour, the table bread was covered in soap for some reason and the owner would not accept any criticism of the poor service. The food was fine otherwise.

Dont go! are the best words to describe this restaurant. Really DONT ever go!!! is even better if you are a vegitarian . Now, a few facts are important so that the BAD review is grounded in fact. The food was flavorless The sauces are very watery. The restaurant is understaffed. What is not acceptable is that fact that the restaurant is: OVER PRICED

they have delicious food, but communication is really difficult as they only speak French. the woman was quite mad, even though I tried to communicate the half of the French language, and I myself speak 3 languages and I don't speak French, but I can understand. for me it is difficult to understand how to suppress such a thing. at the end I was also a guest and I left 70 swiss francs there with 2 mezze I had alone. would be nice if it were served more friendly.

"Au Charbon is family managed restaurant, set in a pleasant and quiet part of Lausanne, easily reached on the bus, if like me, you are touring. The restaurant is ‘cosy’ and the owners have maximised the number of seats available, which sounds like me...spinning a cramped venue but it actually works out okay. We had sufficient room to relax and eat without imposing on our neighbouring tables, so the efficient spacing added to the atmosphere and the wine waiter added character. The restaurant has a traditional pizzeria menu with no surprises with the choice of pizza, steaks etc. All our choices were well presented, cooked exactly to request and delicious. Portion sizes were just right too On the down side, the table service was very slow, it took around an hour for the first course and one dish was wrong when it eventually arrived but we put that down to being busy. The lady serving was also a bit too presumptuous that the change from the bill would be her tip and she didn’t return the change, eventually coming back to confirm if this was so. In summary, I enjoyed my meal and time at Au Charbon, they seem to have earned their reputation from being consistent in serving nicely presented dishes that are cooked well. The higher end options are a bit on the pricey side if you are on holiday, especially when considering this is a pizzeria (a steak costing CHF). However most restaurants of this type in Lausanne are similarly priced and it is what it is."
