"Went to Bieberbau for the first time to see if the 1 star Michelin rating was deserved. The restaurant is located in a quiet side street. The inside features artistic stucco murals that go well back to the last century. The seating arrangements are conventional but overall comfortable. While tables are not too far off from one other, the noise level is low and one can have a conversation without having to shout. The menu is pretty basic. It offers two carnivore and one vegetarian oprion. Nice about Bieberbau is that one can mix up appetizers, mains and desserts from all three options to create one's preferred menu. The three course option starts at around €50 with four and five course options adding €10 each. A wine accompanyment by the glass is available but you have to ask for it. They basically select some wines from their open wine selection for this. Of course there is also an extensive wine list by the bottle. There is no question that the food selection and cooking at Bieberbau is very good but I would not call it inspiring. Given that the restaurant maintains it's own herb garden outside the city a lot of lesser known herbs are being used to create dips and accent flavors but none of them were really convincing. The baked organic egg made that clearest. While there were a number of flavors on the plate they were more comparable to solo players in a concert but not a well tuned orchestra. In the end the curry powder became so dominant that every other flavor on the plate was overpowered. One had the impression that the idea of the kitchen is not to create a harmonic meal overall but to shine by providing as many sauces of herbs that you never heard about. Some certainly tasted interesting but one also could understand why these herbs are not often used and regarded as forgotten. The flaeming venison was the best dish of the lot as the deer meat was perfectly cooked medium and the chanterelle mushrooms added texture and flavor. The gnocci's on the other hand were tasteless as is so often the case with these dumplings. The octopus with leek was okay but hardly worth the name as there was one tiny arm of octopus. A better name for the dish would be "small salad with octopus decoration". The strawberry with mascarpone was good but pretty ordinary. Various amuse-bouche were served on flat stones. All were good but again, no shooting star here either. Staff was curteous and pretty efficient but not very forthcoming. I had to specifically request services that were not advertised but are common in other Michelin rated restaurants (wine accompanyment) and rough pricing was only provided upon specifically asking for it. A Michelin star restaurant should do better. Also the marking on the invoice (tip not included) is an imsult. German law requires that a 12% service charge be part of the list price. Overall Bieberbau is an okay and safe choice for a business dinner but if you are looking for true inspiration and a harmonious meal go to Tim Raue in Mitte."
