"We came here for my birthday this year based on the menu we saw online and the fact that we’d come here last year and always meant to make it back. I called earlier in the day to check regarding children’s menu and a gluten free menu and was told not to worry as all food is made fresh and there was usually as a minimum a burger and fish a chips that fulfilled this. I enquired whether I had to make a booking for this afternoon and was told to just come down. How I wish We didn’t bother and chose somewhere Else. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we arrived and for a fair duration after, and was told that even though they opened at 5 they wouldn’t take a food order until 6pm. Which is of course fine, so we had ample time to prepare our order and was ready to order as soon as they were ready to take it! We the proceeded to wait 55 minutes before even a peek of food turned up and only because we had asked how long it would be after 45 minutes and again after nearly an hour. When the food came it was luke warm at best, so cold for other diners that it got sent back for a quick dunk back in some oil. Fish was so bland and watery, and the peas came in their own little bowl of water which was nice, nearly as nice as the 4 hairs that we found across the meals, naturally half way through the meal but we darent send anything back with 4 starving children and a very strong Will to get the hell out of there. Please- save yourself the pain of this place and go somewhere Else."

Excellent curry tasting event this evening. Well organised, delicious food and a great opportunity to catch up with so many neighbours. Well done Black Horse.

Visited today with our 5 year old, the service was fantastic and the food was possibly the best roast I’ve ever had. Definitely be visiting again, even gave our son sweets at the end for his good manners Ver carta

Ignore every review on The Black Horse before October 2018. The pub is under new management and wow what a difference. Just had the best pub Sunday lunch for a very long time. Roast beef melts in your mouth and the marmalade glazed gammon an absolute delight. Followed up with as good a bread and butter pudding as Mum could make (SERIOUS!! then that’s going to be a winner! Very reasonable. Staff are very accommodating, friendly and there when you need them. The wine selection is superb and very reasonable. An extremely passable Pinot Noir for £21.50. The Black Horse has, without doubt, had its issues. But under the new management of Paul and Mel and with a brilliant, very keen young chef in...

The Black Horse is under new management and has been consistently good over the last couple of months I have been eating with friends and family, and also popping in for the odd drink. Last night 's Pie Night was just delicious. Jamie, head-chef had made individual 'proper ' pies that were simply exquisite. I had Steak Ale, washed down with a pint of delicious guest ale Seafarers . Others had Salmon Prawn which again was a fully encased pie, served with a seafood velouté, apparently divine. A couple of weeks ago we were at the Black Horse for Sunday Lunch after attending the Remembrance in Chelmsford. Again it was a very well organised affair, served with smiles and just the right degree of...

Visited Sunday evening with family of 8 adults. Service was poor from front of house. Really miserable, no greeting or smile from either of the 2 girls. Only 1 other family in there but they were getting ready to leave so we were then the only other customers. Most had roast which they said was nice apart from 1 who loves gravy but not their one! 1 asked for steak knife as beef was thickly sliced which they never got! My fish n chips was not how it was when i last visited back in October. Chips were frozen where before proper potatoes fried and the fish was watery and tasteless as were the peas so very disappointed!! I knew it was too good to last. Food was delivered by chief and no one came... Ver carta

Delighted to have our village pub back at last and above all. to see that it is actually open 6 days a week! Jamie, the chef, is working really hard to provide good quality food and to come up with ideas for theme nights. It is also good to see the friendly owners, Paul and Mel, who are often there to see how things are going and to have a chat etc. They seem to be open to suggestions and the menu has already been adapted to cater for the needs of some of the regulars. We love the lunch-time sharing platter, which offers a choice of items along with Ciabatta bread, salad and chutney. The curry nights are also good and a lot of effort went into preparations for a recent Hallowe'en barbecue. Ha...

"We used to go to the Green Man a lot under the previous owners and thought we would give it a try again for our wedding anniversary with our children. Bit of a mistake! You can see they are trying to improve the quality of the food, which was always good anyway but poor training and terrible service really let it down tonight. So we sat at 17:30 and it was 15 mins before we were offered drinks, not a massive deal. Food order another 10 mins. Both the kids ordered burgers so I specifically asked if there was mayonnaise in the burgers and if the coleslaw was separate and was told no mayo in burger and coleslaw separate. Starter sharing mezze was OK except only 2 bits of halloumi (for 4 people) and odd tasting sandy brown coloured olives. So the burgers turn up and have coleslaw chucked on the plate right on the burgers and mayo in the buns. So they went back and “replacements” came back from the kitchen very quickly which were the same burgers just in new buns with no mayo and the coleslaw in ramekins. Then the wife’s fish and chips. Looked nice and waited for service to offer condiments however seems we are being left alone now we said about the burgers. So she starts tucking in and finds a short dark black human hair on the plate. So that gets sent back. To be fair to the chef came out and apologised that he had not put his bandana on and unfortunately one of his hairs had fallen on the plate. OK forgive that once and say thank you for apologising. However it’s the same but if fish (as the wife had picked a bit off the end) and probably the same chips. Lovely. Then we totally get left alone. The kids were enjoying the burgers but slightly over salted and the water had run out so we thought get more water so they can finish and that someone would come near, which they did but to serve the tables around us and completely ignore us, even when trying to get attention. So in the end we get up (and could totally have walked out without paying and none of the staff would have been any the wiser) that’s not us though, so we paid. Told the chap at the bar that we had to come to the bar as we had been totally ignored (him being one of the many staff fawning over the people on the tables around us) and he just said OK handed the receipt. Now was the time for an apology, maybe even some sort of discount (which most places just do regardless) but no, nothing, no apology, no discount. Not bothered about the money So I paid in full and will be extremely unlikely to (read will never) set foot in the place again as there was no attempt at apology. Happy wedding anniversary! When you book there is a question “is it a special occasion” which we put yes it was our wedding anniversary and no acknowledgment so they obviously ignore those bits on the bookings. It felt like it was very clicky, like if you are known or are loaded you get looked after. Not a place for mere mortals."
