"This is definitely Bangor’s best kept secret!! Visited here on a recent Saturday evening, they seem to be operating two sitting so we chose the earlier one at 1745. We were first to arrive and shown straight to our table by an extremely pleasant waitress. We were given breads and she opened our BYO wine. The menu is fantastic, well laid out with an emphasis on fresh fish. Despite this I opted for chicken liver pate followed by a delightful sirloin steak. The food was absolutely faultless, the staff were fantastic and the prices were unbeatable for the quality of food. The set menu offers 2 courses for a mere £25. I have visited other fine dining restaurants in the Bangor area and this one is head and shoulders above them in terms of price and atmosphere. I was on the fence at actually submitting this review as I would like this place to remain a bit of a locals secret but if you are in the area definitely give it a try. You will not be disappointed!"

As always Cafe Essence delivers on great, fresh food. Love it here, the roast monkfish on prawn risotto delicious. The rest of the party that had steaks said they were great.

My husband and I had a fantastic meal at this restaurant for my birthday. We enjoyed lobster and scallops for starters, delicious lamb for the main course, and an amazing peanut butter ice cream dessert. We will definitely be returning!

It is always a pleasure to dine at this restaurant. It is not overpriced, but rather worth saving up for. Each bite is truly delicious and made with quality local ingredients cooked to perfection. We are grateful for the opportunity to dine here and thankful that the restaurant is still in business.

On a wet Thursday night, what a gem of a find!! Spoilt for choice with the menu. However I throughly recommend the amazing Crispy beef starter and the hake in Lobster Bisque was out of this world. Succulent, juicy and full of flavour. Excellent value for money as it is a bring your own wine. Summary- YUM! Ver carta

Excellent food, excellent service : couldn’t fault this restaurant. Can’t stop going back! The service is so personal and always with a smile. We were so pleased when the lobster came back to the surf and turf. Seafood amazing. So good with my young son too. Go to this restaurant and you won’t be disappointed!

Went with group and chose meal before the night. Had a starter of Pate which wasn't too bad but main meal arrived luke warm. Didn't want to make a fuss on the night as l was with a group who I'd not met before. Main consisted of 2 squares of dauphinoise potatoes some long stem broccoli and pork fillet that wasn't particularly tender. Needless to say, l won't be returning.

We were lucky enough to get a cancellation on the date we required.. always booked well in advance. Whilst the surroundings aren't fancy the food was delicious.. good wholesome home cooking, as we like it and it arrived with a smile. Rack of lamb and fish of the day hake didn't disappoint. Bring your own alcohol .. always a bonus : We'll be back very soon plan to make this a regular. Ver carta

Without doubt, Bangor’s best kept secret. Service is always excellent. Super friendly and efficient. Seafood is amazing. Our group had some dietary requirements and staff were knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble (or at least that was impression they gave us!! . Always consistent. Always top quality. Definitely my favourite place to eat out in Bangor. Oh….and it’s BYO….what’s not to love!!

The restaurant is located on the upper floor of a renovated terrace house, making it relatively small with a limited number of tables for two to six people. The menu offers two courses for £27.50 and is BYOB as the restaurant is not licensed, with a £1.50 per person glass charge. Our party of six ordered dishes such as steaks with a £6 supplement, rack of lamb, and a special of silver hake with tomato, chorizo, and baby boiled potatoes. The seafood salad starter was basic and lacking in flavor, while the steaks and hake were also underwhelming. The presentation and taste of the main dishes left much to be desired, with the sides being watery and tasteless. The lack of vegetables served with...

"Tl;dr this chef and this team are on their way to a Michelin star, so get a reservation while you can. We visited here Saturday 29, where we enjoyed the tasting menu by current chef John Hollywood. Their tasting menu is averagely priced, comparable to Dublin’s Bastible, with 6 courses actual, and plenty of wine. Aside from the setup, nothing else is average. The staff at Boat House are second to none. The atmosphere is similar to Hof van Cleve, with chirpy, witty staff happily serving customers and following the mood of the table. Their sommelier and wine pairing is particularly special, with each bottle subverting the trend, unexpected, but without compromising on quality (see: Bastible cannot figure out wine). Their sommelier is a wine nerd who’s happy to go into as much depth as you want, but you feed off the passion between courses, which is a really great dynamic between the staff and the table this is rare, usually only achieved at top star restaurants. I’ve never found this in the island of Ireland. The food itself is the perfect mix of foraged from land and sea, each dish testing and surprising you, but with some classics mixed in (beef Barolo your reward for trusting the chef). On the whole, the menu seems designed to subvert comfort you in equal measure, and succeeds with every course. You won’t find the same level of experimentation from many of the Italian tasting menus on the circuit, but that comes with the assurances of consistent quality and a journey that’ll never let you down, where subversive wine pairings inject a level of exciting chaos without risking the food. Between the atmosphere, staff, and chemistry at the table in the kitchen, a trip to Boat House can be held in the same regard as some of the world’s top Michelin star restaurants. They’re on the way. They have the ingredients, whether you know it or not. Better start those birthday reservations now."
