"I meant to go To Café Procope on this trip, since it is the oldest restaurant (though under different names) in Paris. It was host to American revolutionary figures like Franklin (who has a whole large room named after him). Jefferson, and Jean-Paul Jones. Likewise, it hosted Enlightenment figures such as Condorçet, d'Holbach, Rousseau, Diderot and more. During the French Revolution it served as one of the meeting places of the revolutionary societies, where Danton, Marat, Robespierre, Desmoulins and others gathered. Right across the street is the room where Marat set up his famous newspaper. Danton's statue is in the square outside of the restaurant. Napoleon also dined there, and his hat is on display. Upstairs you can see more of the history of the place, even in the bathrooms, which are marked with the revolutionary Citoyens et Citoyennes. It was for this reason that I gave the restaurant 5 stars, not for the food or the service. The food is good, especially the appetizer of avocados with langoustines and crab. The sole meunière was good, but not the best I have ever had.I did have a complaint about the service. While the maitre d' was wonderful (and ended up doing most of the work for me and most of the people around me), my waiter was one of the worst. He acted like he could care less that I was there, never asked how any of the food was, and didn't even pour from the half-bottle of wine (I had to do it myself except for once when the maitre d' did so). My five stars for this restaurant do not include my waiter, who did not even deserve 1 star."
