"I booked the Dornoch Castle Hotel for a special lunch to celebrate my father's 88th birthday (I noted this on my booking form). I booked the restaurant on the back of the website which showed a sample Al la Carte menu from April. When we arrived the restaurant was completely empty and the menu bore no resemblance to the one on the website it consisted mostly of fish and chip and burgers not a la carte! (and was at a completely cheaper price point than an a la carte menu). The burgers were exceptionally dry, there was no acknowledgment that the occasion had been flagged as a special occasion and when I mentioned to, I think the Manager, my disappointment in the menu I was told that there are three menus on the website. I have looked several times since at the website and I am afraid that is not true all that is shown in the April a la carte menu! The meal spoiled what was to be a celebratory family day out having travelled up to Dornoch from Edinburgh. I would not recommend anyone to visit this restaurant!"

We stayed at the Dornoch Castle and had a bed, dinner and breakfast package. I wasn’t sure how that would be, but we are very pleased we did. The meals were very good and the wine and whiskey selection excellent.

Corniche Castle! Expected great things and was sadly disappointed. The thin ribeye steak reminded me of Ponderosa (an average fast food steakhouse in the US). The venison burger was decent and had a good taste. The experience was fine but didn’t live up to expectations.

Central easy to find hotel. Pleasant staff , room satisfactory but light in bathroom dull ,no coffee sachets in room . Meal reasonable value and food tasted good , wine and beer good . Very noisy dining room , with little ambience . Wooden rooms or sheds spoiled the garden look .

Ordered from the early evening menu which was great value compared to a la carte. Lovely bar area. Real old world feel. Would be nice in winter with the fire roaring. Food was excellent. Portion sizes really good for starter. We had smoked salmon and soup. Both delicious. We went for the supplement mains. Steak and langoustine salad. Again both superb and worth the upgrade. Wine was also good quality and value. Dining room is also a lovely space. Staff attentive but not over bearing. A really excellent meal. Well worth a visit. Marked four out of five for value just because Dornoch as a whole is expensive.

The food was excellent, no question about that. The restaurant is entered through the attractively decorated whisky bar in the hotel, which makes the appearance of the restaurant itself even more disappointing. The room is bland apart from a few images painted on the walls. There are no tablecloths even and the whole ambience fails to reflect the high standard of cooking and especially the prices charged. Similarly the waiting staff need to be better trained as they really do not appear to know how to take orders, deliver and take away plates and present the bill. Again this does not reflect the prices charged.

"Glorified Public School Dinner food hiding behind a beautiful scenic dining area. Server wasn 't too bothered about their job, kinda like it doesn 't matter what food they did and didn 't have in that day. Seemed very excited when leaving the table to tend an empty bar. Didn 't ask once if food was okay, if they had I 'd of mentioned the myriad of wrongs occurring upon the three plates in front of us. Ordered from evening menu, beef burger, chicken burger and garlic bread. The former two came with undercooked chips (as if the fryer was just turned on for our meal), pale onion rings, two dimensional tomato slices (two of per burger), two measly leafs of lettuce and no house sauce of any kind. I 've had tastier PVA glue than the coleslaw. My partners chips were akin to hash browns but undercooked. The beef burger had one thing going for it, there was Infact beef on it. The chicken burger my partner had was tasteless and fell apart. Garlic bread appeared to be some kind of muffin or cinnamon swirl that was re purpoused for our order. Aside it was a teeny tiny salad, which actually contained a highlight from my experience: red onion that actually tasted of onion/unlike the onion dense coleslaw. All in all, me and my partner left feeling like our local kebab shop would have left us more impressed. As we were leaving the server told us she didn 't mind that there was some issues with the card reader as it 'filled her time as she has nothing else to do '. It should be noted they were wearing their outside clothes and served us with the jacket on. Chef was seen at bar after meal, standing not doing much. The main concern for the staff appeared to be; what music was being played as they skipped through the world 's most disorganised playlist (no, no one wants to listen to loch lomond while they are eating). Speaking as a working chef, I feel my wife could cook a better meal with half the ingredients and equipment than this 'professional ' kitchen can. The opertunity to do better is overwhelming, however it will take a long time before you convince me to enter with an empty stomach again. Wheelchair accessibility: It 's not friendly for those that are handicapped in any way. Steep narrow stairs and difficult to navigate room space."
