"We organized a dinner in this restaurant for 20 people, fixed menu', reserved with more than 1-week notice. We arrived at the place in time, started ordering wine. After 1 hour and 6 bottles gone we didn't even receive bread or breadstick. After 4 times we went asking if we could at least have something to eat, we received some bread (enough to satisfy a pigeon, maybe and 2 small plates (the size of an apero for 2 people of bread and butter (yes. plain. bread. and. butter. Finally we receive our order. The starters are semi cold soups with no taste or texture. The main dish is nice. Best dish the dessert, too bad that, even with fixed menu and 1 week notice, it was available only for half of the table, and we had to order something different."

We had several different things from the menu, traditional brasserie food, all was good. The wine list is good. Thé souris d’agneau was particularly great.

Avoid like the plague. Sketchy place that does not stick to contracts. Had a 50 percent off deal via The Fork they chose not to honor as they were busy. Awful people. They lie and do not honor reservations.

Waitress was very nice but the food average. Our table was reserved for 19:30, we ordered at 20:00 then waited 1.5 hours for our meal to arrive. When we complained the manager brought a half eaten plate of food back to our table and behaved aggressively.

Raw chicken terrible service the manager was a joke. If you serve a pregnant woman RAW CHICKEN you don't ask them to get in touch if there is a problem with the baby and offer no apology! There is a high risk with raw chicken and pregnancy toxoplasmose and that is no joke.

This restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and deco inside, and the staff are very friendly, much more than typical swiss restaurants. The menu is refreshingly simple and covers all the main areas, the meat was very good and the lentil curry too. The wine list was excellent and all was reasonably priced. will definitely return.

Cannot recommend this place at all. Service is lousy (ask for a coffee if you want a hot chocolate, ask for fries if you want potato purée), food is not good at all and worst of all, it doesn’t live up to its reputation and history in Lausanne. There are other brasseries that are way more worth it. Oh, and if you ask for the manager/ owner, just expect him to hide.

Absolutely amateurish moderate service, canned goods with ready-made sauces and this in poor quality and quantity! Overheated fluffy red wine is served in miniature glasses. Neither water nor bread is handed out later and certainly not checked whether everything is in order. There are two different starters as there are not enough starters and you get what the waiter decides! Absolutely not recommended!!

Arrived 19:30, welcome and getting drinks was lovely. We had to wait for more then an hour to be able to order. Another hour wait for starters arrived. Got Egg Florentine nearly without sauce. Other starters looked good. We had to wait for another 100 minutes for dinner to arrive. Dinner was oke, nothing special. Since it was past 23:00 there was no time left for desserts. Not even a free drink was offered or any real excuse for the insane long waiting. We left the restaurant disappointed.

"Au Charbon is family managed restaurant, set in a pleasant and quiet part of Lausanne, easily reached on the bus, if like me, you are touring. The restaurant is ‘cosy’ and the owners have maximised the number of seats available, which sounds like me...spinning a cramped venue but it actually works out okay. We had sufficient room to relax and eat without imposing on our neighbouring tables, so the efficient spacing added to the atmosphere and the wine waiter added character. The restaurant has a traditional pizzeria menu with no surprises with the choice of pizza, steaks etc. All our choices were well presented, cooked exactly to request and delicious. Portion sizes were just right too On the down side, the table service was very slow, it took around an hour for the first course and one dish was wrong when it eventually arrived but we put that down to being busy. The lady serving was also a bit too presumptuous that the change from the bill would be her tip and she didn’t return the change, eventually coming back to confirm if this was so. In summary, I enjoyed my meal and time at Au Charbon, they seem to have earned their reputation from being consistent in serving nicely presented dishes that are cooked well. The higher end options are a bit on the pricey side if you are on holiday, especially when considering this is a pizzeria (a steak costing CHF). However most restaurants of this type in Lausanne are similarly priced and it is what it is."
