"After taking a walk with my dog, we were on the lookout for a quick, dog-friendly lunch spot. We were warmly greeted by Jess (please forgive me if I'm mistaken about the name) and the Bar Manager. We chose items from the snack menu—a toastie with a side of chips and a chili chicken wrap, also served with chips. The chili chicken and cheese wrap received a satisfied nod and a cheesy thumbs up from my companion, while my toastie was exactly what I hoped for: a perfect combination of cheese, ham, and red onion, featuring some of the best ham I've ever had. Overall, it was a thumbs up from me as well. Thank you to the Royal Hotel Bar for a great experience! (I also heard that the restrooms were very clean—10/10 for that!)"

"To date we have been here 3 times. Their main turnover is carry out meals. They also have a small nice and clean dining area. With being mainly a carry out business I reckon all their meals are based on 3 base curry sauces. The curries my friends and I have ordered are good but not exactly the correct flavour. For example: week 1 a Buna tasted of a deep smokie flavour which tasted pleasant enough but a Buna does not have this flavour characteristics. Week 3: I ordered a Celyon which was a different colour and taste from a Celyon I ordered the week before. This Celyon tasted like the Buna from week 1 but a little hotter. I could not detect the lemon and coconut flavour that a Celyon should have. The pakuras were excellent as were the side dishes. Portion sizes were good and the the service was friendly. I will return. After a few return visits (Jan 2019) my friends and myself have given up with the variation in quality of the food. We now go into town for something half decent."

"Lovely place to stay, very clean,the staff are excellent, extremely friendly and welcoming. Plenty of car park spaces. The room was nicely decorated and furnished, the bed was comfortable and was very peaceful, no traffic noise whatsoever which is a problem at many other hotels I've stayed at. The restaurant is very good, prices are about average but food quality is above average, nice atmosphere in the restaurant and serving staff are very courteous and helpful. Breakfast was lovely and again the staff were polite and friendly the only thing I could probably say to improve the breakfast is maybe have a self service section for cereals/toast and drinks etc to save calling the staff over when you need something. Probably in my top of hotels I have stayed at in the last Will definitely be staying there again when next in the Edinburgh area."

"Have been coming to Giovanni’s for years as a family. But the last few visits have been very disappointing. Came a month or so ago and found the service very poor nobody checking whether meal was okay or if we needed anything else. Brushed this off as a bad day for staff. Returned last week and won’t be returning. Ordered a child’s fish goujons for an elderly relative and these arrived so overcooked they were inedible. We sat with empty plates for 25 minutes before these were cleared and I said to the waitress about them being over cooked and she rather rudely said I should have said something and the chef ‘just makes them crispy’. When I explained that nobody came to check how the meal all I got was an eye roll. Very disappointing as it’s one of the only nice places to sit in and eat in Penicuik."
