Visiting Germany from Seattle I discovered this place right in the heart of Mainz. I loved the welcoming atmosphere of this restaurant and enjoyed the excellent food. Would recommend it to anyone visiting Mainz, definitely worth it!

Not sure what has happened. We've been to Am Gautor a number of times over the years. It is in the neighborhood. We stopped Saturday after the Mainz game and were sorely disappointed. The food was horrible. Hubby had a Crostada When asked, it...was described as like a Flammenkucke In actuality, it was like a poor quality frozen pizza crust with a few side toppings to try to disguise it. I had the Hubertus schnitzel with bratkartoffelen. Schnitzel was thin and overly breaded and had cool spots. Microwaved? The sauce was ok. Potatoes were rubbery like they had been microwaved to heat them up. They have removed the eis kucken counter.

The menu at the door tempted us with a reasonable selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. The spacious restaurant has a modern, off-the-peg feel and the subdued lighting gives it a somewhat cold atmosphere. The vegetarian bulgar wheat, tomato and mint soup was hearty...and warming (and is the reason why this is a low rather than a high review). The vegetarian and vegetable and cod couscous dishes served in pretty bowls were disappointingly small and needed more vegetables and more sauce. The waiter (and apparatntly the chef) hadn't heard of harissa but offered Tabasco. The mint and ginger tea arrived without a spoon or sugar, the gin and tonic without ice. Ver carta
