"The food was acceptable if more basic than I was expecting, the service was poor, we felt we were rather in the way. Quite sloppy pasta and shepherds pie were served with knife and fork and I had to leave the table to find waiting staff to request a spoon. My friend and I had planned to relax over coffee in the bar area but were made to feel uncomfortable about doing this, I think they would rather we hurried up and went. From the bar, I went in search of the ladies room and had to ask 2 further members of hotel staff to move out of my way as they were talking together in front of door way and I couldn’t get round them. I hoped it would be a treat for my friend but I would have found more atmosphere, good service and better food in Zizzi in the high street."

The actual meal was excellent and served in a friendly way. We did not get the table we wanted because of the failures of the Open Table reservation system. Despite having made a reservation in advance on-line the restaurant reception staff told us that that they had not received any notification of it.

We enjoyed our meal in the Riverside restaurant, the lobster and crayfish cocktail was delightful as were the scallpos. The nibbles of sough dough bread arrived at the same time as our starter and was was really not needed. The steak and chips were pleasant but have had better. The chicken milanese again was pleasant but have had better. Overall we enjoyed it, but cannot give a 5 star rating.

Having got stuck in traffic jams for over an hour and a half, we could not make the booking time of 12.30pm at the Riverside Restaurant. We were limited on time anyway, as we had a wedding to attend at 2.30pm following the lunch. I therefore tried to phone the Riverside Restaurant whilst sitting in the traffic jam to tell them that we would not make the booking to cancel it. However, I could not speak to an actual person, as is so often the case these days, and was faced with an automated list of options for the Macdonald Compleat Angler, none of which came close to matching what I was ringing about (ie cancelling a booking for the Riverside Restaurant).
