"My wife and I had lunch on Sunday. Disconcerting to find a gate half across the car park and with a Private car park notice. Welcome to the Bear on the Barge car park would be friendlier. The front door is shut and we had...to go round the side. There is no indication of this anywhere, however having been before, we knew there was a side entrance in the garden. Very small menu, mainly Greek Souvlakis, some skewer dishes and pizza. We had expected some sort of Sunday roast. It's a pub (or at least, it used to be) but the only beer was lager and only a choice of three at that. After the mains (one lamb and one halloumi skewer, and very tasty they were too), we asked about desserts. We're not doing those Something to do with covid.. How about a coffee. What would we like Filter A blank look. I asked Have you a machine Yes, they had a machine. OK, two cappucinos. Waitress came back ten minutes later to say they had no milk. Add to that we were sitting in an almost empty room on a cold, wet day with the door to the garden permanently open. The place can hold a huge number the large garden is full of tables and there is a big marquee at the side but they don't seem geared to cope. The waitress sympathised and said it was due to covid. Well, yes, but other places have bounced back. She also said they were going to close in September for refurbishment. I think that maybe a complete rethink of their core business would be useful. So no complaints about the food but it was not the pleasant Sunday lunch in a warm pub atmosphere that we had looked forward to."

So on a random hunt for a restaurant for a quick bite, we came across this great pub/restaurant. Walking in, you'd think it was a tiny pub until you go for

Plenty of out door space the starters were ok I wouldn’t say they were brilliant. Prices seem to slightly high for what you were getting to eat and drink . QR menu was given that was working fine . Drinks came in small plastics glasses...that looked like they needed a good clean , main course found that chicken was very dry not enough seasoning and the felt like with all the meals we had . Interaction with the staff was very limited they were more interested in the Euro on the big screens . This felt lack of management no one came round if we were happy with anything or anything else we wanted.

We wanted to have a meal in a beer garden on a beautiful, sunny evening, so we chose this restaurant. The beer garden is spacious and well-maintained with a play area for children. We had looked at the menu beforehand and it was to our liking. Although we had to order through a QR code and our food came in a box with plastic utensils, we didn't mind as we felt they were taking precautions due to the pandemic. The portions were generous and we all enjoyed our meals, which were served promptly. As for areas of improvement, we suggest offering a larger selection of ice cream and addressing any issues in the restrooms, such as broken locks and toilet seats.

Very disappointed with this pub. First visit was to the toilets, which were terrible. In the Ladies there were cubicles, only one had a toilet seat and that didn’t fit the pan and was dirty. There were lots of picnic tables in the garden...but they weren’t cleaned. You could only look at the menus, order and pay via mobile so a bit difficult unless you have a smartphone. The food wasn’t anything special, all served in disposable boxes with disposable cutlery. Menu disappointing and staff not very helpful. Such a lovely situation close to the Grand Union Canal with amazing potential, so disappointing. Obviously gets busy in summer as there are so many tables. Ver carta

Oh my goodness, what a shambles. We visit here for our birthday s usually twice a year. We arrived tonight to be told outside seating only and blamed covid, yet we visited July and December inside and had a good meal. Since it’s been taken...over initially it was all good. So, tonight, we ate out of plastic and cardboard and asked why we could not sit indoors. Apparently they have problems with flys. for a glass of mediocre Trebbiano is ridiculous but ok, we are our first a birthday meal. Could not order a bottle. Plastic glasses again not great. To top it off a visit to the loo- in the ladies no toilet seats. No thanks I’ll pass Please sort it out, a great pub ruined.

An awful experience. Myself and a few friends went for the Euro final. We’d pre booked two tables to ensure we had seats, but upon arrival, we were told to ‘try to find a table’ and it appeared they were operating a first come...first serve system. So, despite booking weeks in advance, we were unable to sit anywhere. We ordered (and paid for) some drinks at We never received them we were in the pub until We had to watch the euros final sober, without a single drink, despite our money being taken. I’m aware England in the finals of the Euros is not an ordinary night for a pub, but to say the Bear on the Barge was underprepared would be a huge understatement. Even though England were on, it wa...

My experience tonight was disappointing, and I would not recommend this restaurant at all. There is no table service, and seating is only available outside. The interior has empty tables, but unfortunately, customers are not given the option to sit inside. This could be inconvenient, especially on cold days. The menu is not very impressive, although the kids menu is good and reasonably priced. However, there are no desserts available. The main dishes for adults are just okay, and they are served in boxes which is not ideal for a restaurant setting. Overall, the food is decent but not outstanding. The restaurant has potential, especially since it is under new management. It would benefit from... Ver carta

I notice some other reviewers complain about the toilets which is pretty fair, they are not fantastic. The gents are about nearly big enough in the winter when it's indoors only, but in the summer with the huge garden they are very small and...the walkers on the canal also visit which hardly helps. That said, we love this place. As the Horse and Barge there was nothing special, so when they closed we were disappointed, but not gutted. As the Bear on the Barge they are great. Pizza Oven check, huge marquee check, loads of outdoor seating check, outdoor bar and kitchen check. They also have some of the best staff who used to work at Bar Italia and that used to be one of the best pubs in the ar...

Gone are the days when this used to be a lovely, friendly beer garden. We came here for the Live Music every Friday as advertised on their website, to be told there currently is no live music due to covid restrictions. (No time to update...website in the last year But more annoyingly: There are now speakers every across the ENTIRE beer garden. Not a single quiet spot where one could have a nice time without the conversation feeling overwhelmed by annoying chart/dance music. "Dominant music level probably describes it best). I'd understand it if this was a party place in town centre. But even at with only customers in the beer garden, the music was simply too loud to have an enjoyable convers...
