"I have been here several times over the last two years most recently today. Every time the food is outstanding! Well presented, flavorful and hot food is hot! Staff are always friendly and personable. Today was a socially distanced lunch that was up to our expectations again. I had the steak and ale pie, served with fresh steamed seasonal veg and chips. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for good food in a wonderful english village pub. Beautiful garden for the summer and covid! I looked at the other meals for guests and they all looked wonderful and mutterings from them showed they were equally well enjoyed. I almost hate to rate this place as its a hidden gem and I want to be selfish!"

This was a lovely place to stay. We stayed x1 night but had the Sunday lunch there. I am not joking, it was the best Sunday lunch I’ve ever had. I could hardly move, such healthy servings and very reasonably priced. The accommodation was spotless and private, feeling like it was your own room. The next day, breakfast. Again, amazing. The full English is exactly that, everything fresh, hot and tasty. Brilliant. Would definitely stay again.

Another trip to this fantastic place in the most loveliest of settings. We travelled from Nottingham ! so worth the miles !! Me and my friend both had the gammon steak, egg, pineapple, divine homemade chips, mushrooms, onion rings, peas and half a beef tomato !! The gammon was so tender a fantastic meal and great service. Popped into their farm shop before we set off home for my fix of their lovely sausages to take home !! Looking forward to the next visit !! Ver carta

Had one of those rare but memorable stays at the Cholmely. Beautiful twin room with en-suite perfectly maintained/serviced furnished. The property, in a pretty setting is lovely and very peaceful with it's own farm shop selling lovely produce. Staff are pleasant, polite and efficient and the owner friendly genuinely charming. We had an evening meal chosen from a fresh extensive menu. It was delicious as was the wine. The breakfast menu was worthy of a 5* hotel I know because I've stayed in a few). The price of the whole evening including food wine was beyond a bargain. If only it could all be bottled served in B B's nationwide....

Good but not top Drawer! Much anticipated visit having waited a while to get their with Family left us a little disappointed. The portions were pretty big but the food just did not have any ‘stand out’ qualities. The Gammon my wife had was very dry and served with bland plain rice, some of us had the fish (which was great! but we then had to share a bowl of not great chips which was quite awkward to pass between the person having Lasagne, Steak pie and 2x fish dishes Quite a strange way of dishing up food. We werent asked of we wanted extra drinks and had to go to the bar to get more..... Overall a real let down, But each to their own I am sure some people love this place, Just wasn’t for me...

"The Stag Inn is a delightful looking pub overlooking the small green in the village of Barkston near Grantham. Internally the pub is clean and tidy with a range of two and four seater tables with New England shades of light blue on the painted table legs in the restaurant area. We didn’t venture into the pub side so can’t vouch for the decor in there. We arrived unannounced just after opening time of 12 and were offered a table with no difficulty. There was a menu of the usual offerings of fish and chips and a range of burgers together with roast salmon, chargrilled pork chop, a leek and cauliflower cheese pot pie, ham egg and chips and a vegetable lasagne amongst others. A specials chalkboard hung on the far wall and the crab and prawn salad with Mediterranean bread sounded so good we both opted for it. That was a mistake as we were to find out. The meals were reasonably quick to arrive and were served up in two large bowls with a dusting of paprika round the edges. What hit me immediately was the large flaccid green lettuce leaf draped over the edge of the bowl, together with a whole half-a-lemon that we each had. A small wedge would be perfect. The bread tasted sweet and was as far from the Mediterranean as it could possibly be apart from the occasional input of sundried tomato. What irked me most though was that the bread was delivered up pre-buttered with what looked like some bright yellow catering spread. A small ramakin of real butter between the two of us would work so much better. When asked if everything was okay I mentioned this and was told that chef would be informed. Having said all that the crab and prawn salad was full of flavour and sat on a nice mixed salad of red peppers, lettuce, red onion and cornichons. A word of advice to the wise….. don’t sit at the table near the restaurant counter as this is where the pub’s phone is located. On at least two occasions the phone was left to ring unanswered by the staff, presumably as they were busy elsewhere (the pub was by no means full) and was right behind my head! The volume of the ringer was high and it would have been a more pleasant experience for us if, firstly, it was answered and, secondly, the volume was turned down. On the plus side the staff were polite and helpful but the food not so great."
