"Mount Stewart Hotel Portpatrick First of all can I just say that this review is for both the Hotel and restaurant, not just the restaurant which is what tripadviser is asking about, My wife and I checked in on 18/7/22 for two nights dinner bed and breakfast, our initial impression was that the hotel was at the top of a steep road up from Portpatrick Main Street. With only a few parking places at the front, however there is resident parking at the back of the hotel but you then have to carry your bags down a hill at the side of the hotel to enter at the front not a problem but if elderly or infirm could be difficult. It would be sensible to unload at the front and then park at the back of the hotel, if there is no parking at the front, however when you first arrive you don’t know that there is no entrance at the back or anything about the hotel, so first tip would be dump your bags then park the car. On entering the Hotel we were greeted by a welcoming pleasant nice reception person young lady who quickly processed our admission and explained the layout and arrangements for meals etc, good start. We were located in the Wallace room which on the web site is listed as almost a suite, no exaggeration we loved it, a large room with double bed, good sized wardrobe a courtesy mini bar tea and coffee making facilities with a kettle and kenco coffee machine, a large tv never on a large en-suite shower room. In the en-suite there is dormer window this opens and has a pull down blackout blind built into it for privacy from the houses behind it takes a wee bit of fiddling to sort it .Best bit in the room was the window seat with a fantastic view over Portpatrick and the Irish Sea, I cannot express the pleasure we had watching boats coming and going from Portpatrick harbour simple pleasures And the window fully opened to allow air into the room, during the hottest two days of 2022 this was important and needs to be mentioned. On night one we headed down for dinner looking forward to a bit of fine dining and were directed into of all places the breakfast room to be seated at our table I think this is used for residents dining but I feel the room is a bit lacking in atmosphere We asked for a change of table to the bar area with a window table, this was sorted everything was great. Based on our two dinners in the hotel I would have to give the kitchen the thumbs up, the food was good and the service was chatty and friendly all good. Breakfast was well cooked with plenty of choice for cooked options there was cereal and fruit juice to help yourself to but no fresh fruit or yoghurt I found this unusual in a four star hotel. The only niggles I have are to do with the room we were in, there is a large burn in the carpet where someone I think has put the hairdryer down , the window in the main room is difficult to operate because of a rusted locking plate making the mechanism catch, the shower room door has no lock and no door catch so does not stay closed, we had to use a paper wedge to keep the door closed for a modicum of privacy, also an idiot sheet to explain the working of the dormer window would be helpful as most people wil never have had to operate one of these things. On our last morning my wife had a long lie then tried to take a shower only to find that there was no water, I went downstairs to find that there were only some breakfast staff in the hotel, they were very helpful and checked to see if there was any empty rooms, unfortunately there were none, the lady I was talking to explained that the water system in the hotel meant if others were using their shower there wouldn’t be enough pressure to get water to the top floor namely ours, so my wife used bottled water to clean her teeth and then we waited to see if the water pressure built up enough for her to take a shower this was a real adventure, eventually a trickle started then a real shower was had and equilibrium was restored, I found out later that a plumber was in and I take it had fixed whatever the problem had been. Please do not see these things as anything major, we really loved our stay at this"

"For some reason I can not reply to your answer. Sadly you are absolutely wrong in everything you have stated, I find your tactic of attacking people who give less than 5 star reviews. I am not going to try to defend myself, as I stand by everything I said. I have made an appointment to see a solicitor about your untruthful comments. I would really of liked to put a good review up, however, I would not recommend this hovel to my worst enemy. Firstly the room was so small, and tatty, extremely dated with an alarm clock, which surely has been taken from a chalet from Pontins in the 1970s, that even the amazing view could not compensate. There was dog meat/food on the carpet, and I assume ash. When I went to look for someone to let them know, there was no one about. The bathroom was not fit for purpose, one as it was a converted cupboard, and the notice in the room explaining that the steam from the shower which was cracked set off the sensitive smoke alarm, so you could not even have a shower. Then when we went for breakfast, after waiting for 40 minutes for a breakfast which was a 1 sausage, a piece of streaky bacon, uncooked tomatoes and mushrooms, haggis, b pudding and beans. When I went to complain about this on the way out, I had the pleasure of speaking to someone called Donna, who was at best obnoxious, and as unhelpful as it was someone else 's fault, I quote I don 't clean the rooms, I don 't cook the breakfast . I would rather sleep in a tent than give money to this place, please look elsewhere, unless you want to feel as though you are being ripped off. In response to your reply I thankyou for it. I do not deny that I was irate, and if she cried, I feel terrible about that but I have also left things out, like the denial of the previous evenings attempt with the same lady about the state of the room, however I stand by everything I said, As you are true to form, as it never ever seems to be your fault, if you look at the previous low reviews, it is always someone else 's fault. Oh by the way breakfast took 40 minutes, and as you were not there, maybe you can check CCTV and see that the uncooked food was left, as was the haggis, however the toast provided was superb. I applaud your defense of your staff, I truly do. Hopefully you can maybe if you get another less than favourable review, see that it is the same points over and over again, and try to address them points, just a thought. Thanks again for your reply below, and I stand by everything I said, and truly can 't be bothered dissecting your reply, one slight point, I have witnesses about the night before, so I take with a pinch of salt, your comments"

"We arrived early due to journey time so we went to see if we could check in early, we were told we could not check in early (which we did not expect) but wanted to leave our luggage for later on so that we could go and have a look around the local areas, we were told that they could not do this due to not having any storage area. Check in time finally arrived and 3 of the party went to check in and were told that they had to pay £100 gold fee against your room for damages and as the bar do not accept cash or card payments after 11pm. We were not told of this and neither were the bride and groom. On going to our room it was noted that the key for my elderly grandfather did not work after numerous attempts of going up and down the stairs, (lift was broken and in the process of being fixed) On entering our rooms they were the same near enough. After the rest of the party checked in it was brought to light that they did not even pay a fraction of the price that we paid on checking in. That evening came when we went to one of the parties room and it was noted that the air conditioning was not actually working (digital) this was reported the following morning early,, but after numerous attempts to then be told it will be fixed, but for now we can offer you some more fans (Already had 2) that evening they still had not received any information about the air con so we went to reception to ask to be told it will not be fixed until Tuesday, at which point the room was 26 degrees. Another fan was offered but this was declined. They are not ones to make a fuss but this was not acceptable as all other rooms had air conditioning apart from there’s. Nothing was done to reimburse having to stay in a boiling hot room. Breakfast was lovely, catering for allergies which is cooked fresh, thank you chefs. Housekeeping lovely and clean but please pay attention to bathroom corners. Bar staff, thank you for your prompt service during our stay. Receptionist please use your manners (don’t apply to all) it’s not the customers fault if things don’t work, down to Maintenance."

"After making our voyage from Woolton, Liverpool Where John Lennon is from , we stumbled upon the quaint, quiet venue that is “The Anchor Hotel “Kippford””. Going to keep this short and sweet. We stumbled into the venue at 2pm on the dot, where we were greeted by a young lady Graze? , she sat us right by the roaring fire maybe too hot if you ask me LOL . Our baby boy Jack Russel “Ringo” was treated to a bowl of water and a hearty biscuit without him having to move a paw. My wife ate. I had food as well! Graze was very attentive and we were introduced to the South African guy Collin maybe the owner? . We very quickly became close with both the workers, ourselves and Ringo were quite upset we never got the WhatsApp details of the both of them, but “Let it Be” I guess LOL The Beatles Reference . My food was good, but the waiters served. We LOVED the Halloween decorations, reminded us of our home in Woolton, Liverpool. Could definitely use a few more though, but we understand the current cost of living crisis. We were including Ringo under the impression that the hospitality industry is dying, but clearly the natural stars Graze and Collin are stopping this from occurring in Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland, The Anchor Hotel, Kippford, DG54LN. Last time we comed there was a lot of bush on the building, I miss it. Collin please contact me ASAP if you see this, you will always have a home with us here in Woolton, Liverpool. Graze always welcome : . Love, Shyanne, Derek and Ringo the rockstar like the Beetle"

"Upon entering the restaurant was as cosy as i remembered from my last visit several years ago. We were placed at a window table which was great. First hiccup was I’m a cider drinker and on the cider menu it only had a bottled section all being fruit or 0% which I’m not fond of. Had I not asked I wouldn’t have noticed that cider draught was mentioned in draught beer section. Maybe that should be reviewed as I had no intentions of looking at beers being a cider drinker. The next wee fumble was when we looked at the menu and upon approach to take our order we were told the simple words. Beef is unavailable but we have pork. We did not have a clue what she was talking about and assumed she had told us something that was meant for another table. Was only after ordering and needing to use the toilet that we spotted a specials board with roast dinners and other options on them that we had never been told about or made aware of as it also isn’t mentioned on the menu about Sunday roasts. Would have been nice to have been told about this option. The next hiccup i encountered was the dessert menu. We were told no cheesecake left. That was fine cos I only ever order fudgecake or cheesecake when I’m out so the server came back to get our order and I asked for fudgecake. To be told sorry we have none. So I decided to pass on desert. everyone else at our table ordered and ate there’s. So around 20-30 mins had passed and we got up to pay and leave. We were the last table out and I know I seen cheesecake sitting behind of the counter so I assumed one of the staff reserved a slice for themselves which I found rather annoying knowing I ddnt get it instead. For my main I ordered the Katsu chicken. Chicken rice and popadoms were nice. Chips were the best Iv had in a long time. So crispy and fluffy. Top marks there. However the Katsu curry sauce was watery and bland. Being out for a birthday meal I did not want to make a scene so I ate up. But I definitely think the sauce needs improvement. Staff were nice and smily but felt like they were lacking on some simple aspects of service as once again we were on the premises for an hour and a half and we weren’t asked if we would like another drink at any point either after the initial pint. Would I come back….. probably but not in a hurry."
