"We had a family lunch here yesterday and was to be a happy occasion catching up but was hampered by really bad service. We ordered 5 Sunday roast plates. Were given only 1 gravy dish serving for 2 person. Would have thought it’s easy maths when it’s 5 roasts at least bring 2 or 3 gravy’s worth. Told the waitress we needed 2 more as everyone does love gravy and it took about 20 minutes before we got the second gravy by which our beef roasts had turned cold. We ordered chips but was given purple cabbage instead so told the waitress who took our order and attended to our table. The chips arrived about 15 minutes later. Asked what happened to our third gravy which by this time we have given up and decidedly thought we are not going to even be bothered with ordering puddings and just want to get out of here soon as we can. Too frustrating as we only communicated with this one waitress who seemed not to understand or know what to do. Finally third gravy arrived with the manager as we have requested to speak with and she explained that that’s the last gravy dish and that they had made a big pot that day plus gravy should have been on our roast when served. We explained that we were served with no gravy on our plates hence the ask. She seems at lost on what to do and said that’s not how they usually serve their roasts. I have a photo of my roast plate without gravy here. I then suggest that the manager talk to the kitchen staff as it’s clearly something they need to sort internally. We saw another table earlier on where two person having roasts were given 2 gravy dish! And we were 5 people. Overall food was delicious but not coming back for the terrible service though to be fair they did give us a 10 percent discount and we did pay for the purple cabbage which we hadn’t ordered but eaten anyway."

Service was very good, starter excellent. Unfortunately the main let it down, chicken supreme, expected it in some sauce, but it was just chicken on a tasteless mash mixed with with peas, very disappointed.

We attended here for a meal.with a group of friends. Initially all was well, the pub is a lovely setting and we got a good table. However the food took the best part of an hour to arrive which was simply too long and when...

Reasonable choice on the menu, all produce locally sourced if possible and cooked fresh to order. Really good quality and with more than adequate portion sizes (felt comfortable but not stuffed! , friendly service a bonus! Highly recommend.

Went for quiet lunch with the wife after visiting Southampton. The menu said Steak and Ale pie so we ordered two. Horrified to find that not only was it not steak but chiken and ham and there was next to no chicken in the pie and absolutely no ham at all. It was filled with a couple of morsels of chicken and a whole lot of what looked like mashed potato. £33 for the two of them. Gravy was nice though.

Took my Mum here for her birthday. The staff were not very welcoming, I would almost say hostile. We had to wait ages for our drinks order. One of our forks was crusted in food. We then had to wait quite a while to order our food and that took a very long time to arrive considering there were only 3 other tables in the restaurant that had customers eating. I had the duck which was dry, very small and missing the peanuts it was supposed to be served with. My Mum had the pie of the day which had a very tough crust. The pudding that we wanted was not available. Overall an expensive and disappointing meal.

Not the first time we’ve been here but unless your staff and their attitude and attention changes we won’t be back. We were asked if we wanted to sit in the bar or the restaurant where there is table service. We picked the restaurant for a change for a bit of a treat. Seemed a bit of an effort so why bother asking? It wasn’t busy. However, after being shown to our table it was clear the attention was more on preparing furniture and table set up for a large group booking that was due later in the day. We sat for just over 10 minutes no one returned to offer a drink or take our food order. Like I said they were not at all busy. Maybe they forgot but pretty sure we were noticed a few times but...

It could be said I’m a regular here despite the 130+ miles between us! No visit to the New Forest is complete without a pop in for lunch at The Pilgrim hell we even time our ferry to the IoW to include lunch here on the way! Always a friendly welcome and great food. On Monday (2nd May) we dropped in for lunch. The lamb pie served with spring greens and mash was phenomenally fab. I would’ve taken a photo but I couldn’t wait to get stuck in! Unfortunately we were both too full to sample the Bakewell Tart tempting us so decided to book for Sunday lunch and our waitress kindly offered to make the booking for us. When Sunday (8th May) arrived it was quite possibly the hottest day of the year so I...

"My Wife and I don't travel so well these days but decided to go a little further afield from our usual Highcliffe and Christchurch haunts we live in Mudeford. We went twice in point of fact. The first visit was the 21st June when My wife and I had a quiet Birthday celebration lunch prior to the Family celebration later in the day. It was excellent. We only had the Mains and despite it being busy and not having booked we were served promptly and cheerfully with a round of drinks. My Wife had Chicken Pie and I had Liver and Bacon. Both were excellent and my Wifes vegetables were freshly done. I don't have vegetables. We liked it so much we went back three days later to celebrate our youngest Daughters birthday and again had lunch before the Family celebration later in the day. The meal was as fabulous as three days prior. My Wife had a Chicken Roast, our Daughter had Beef Roast and I had an amazingly well filled Steak and Merlot Pie of the Week. As before the vegetables were freshly done. Unusually for us we also had puddings (Lemon Meringue, Bailey's Cheescake and Apple Tart with Custard. All were excellent. All washed down with Tea and a Latte the former being served in nicely twee Teapots. Total cost £80 for the three of us on the second visit. Worth every penny. All in all First Class and couldn't fault it. Disabled parking nicely located in the front with ample parking for those more mobile at the side and back. Just a note for History buffs. The main building was built in 1853 by John Harrison(? a Carpenter thus the name Carpenters Arms."
