"On a warm May evening, having decided to cycle to the next village to check out its pub, we ended up cycling on to the next village and then the next. Happening upon a closed pub, destined for more housing and then a pub called the Queen’s Head that was really a Thai Restaurant, but closed, we considered heading home defeated for a glass of something cold from the fridge. Thankfully we took a look at the Apple Map and noticed another Queen’s Head only a mile or so down a side road at Newton. Intrigued by a second pub with the same name so close we pedalled up the hill the first hill we had found cycling around Cambridge flying through the warm evening air down the other side to arrive at the marvellous Queen’s Head, Newton. As a student in Brighton in 1973 I developed a life long taste for Harvey’s Best Bitter and clearly remember the Gestetnered pages being circulated by the founders of CAMRA advising which pubs stocked real ale, the beginning of the British beer revival, a reaction in part to the mediocrity of product and huge advertising budget of Watney’s Red Barrel. Apparently the Queen’s Head played an important part of the creation of CAMRA after the Landlord decided to start stocking Adnams bitter, which meant meeting the brewers dray at a lay by near the Suffolk border in order to obtain supplies. This is a pub that has proudly retained its heritage and a menu unchanged since the early 70’s and I loved it. It will not suit everyone. If you want laminated menus with a long list of dishes, ready to heat packed in chilled plastic, you are advised to go elsewhere, and please don’t write a wingeing review here. If you want an authentic English Public House with excellent ales straight from the cask, a long family tradition of keeping a Free House, decent wines and a simple menu, then the Queen’s Head, Newton at this five ways cross, on the old main coaching road from London to Cambridge, is the place for you."

I am hesitant to spend too much time on this review, but in three words: dirty, overrated, unwelcoming. We did not feel valued during our visit.

This is a historic traditional pub with a unique soup menu organized by color. They offer a variety of platters of food and a great selection of real ales. The locals are friendly as well.

First came across this wonderful old place by accident years ago. Recently popped in for a quick drink on our way to visit family. This is everything a pub should be....old, interesting and cosy. I could happily have stayed for hours but we had to be off. Will definitely be back. Just a joy. Beautiful rooms and friendly staff. Nothing not to like, if you like a proper, unspoiled old pub.

The Queen 's Head is a little gem. The décor is unique with 'aged ' wooden tables and seats, beams, a large inglenook around a log fire making altogether a great atmosphere. The food range is somewhat limited but from what we saw looked appetising and of good quality. Beer is kept in barrels behind the bar and there is a large selection of wines. Would definitely go there again to eat when we are next in the area.

The Queen's Head is one of the best pubs in the UK. It hasn't been updated for over a hundred years and the beer is the best for miles. We enjoyed the Adnams bitter and the Broadside though the service was a bit on the slow side. Our soups £4) were lovely accompanied by some gorgeous bread. However the food choice beyond that was very limited for sunday lunchtime for one of our party. No baked potatoes were available, the sausage rolls were off and there was no mackerel pate. In the end the chicken liver pate was lovely. And the atmosphere at the pub with its real fires just a short drive from Cambridge is to die for.

I first came to the Queen's Head in 1972. Yesterday, 41 years later it seemed just the same. Simple, traditional and unchanging. The beer is well kept in barrels behind the bar. Ask for a glass of wine and you'll get a sensible choice. The lunchtime food is simple but excellent. Sandwiches use good bread with freshly carved fillings smoked salmon from a whole side of salmon, beef from a roast joint, suitably rare, ham off the bone. There's a soup simmering in a large pot on the bar. The old bar is simple and unchanging in yesterday's cold, the plain wooden seats around the fire were in demand. Candles are on the tables, beams in abundance and a huge inglenook. The larger and lighter new bar...

Twenty years ago, I used to frequent this pub regularly as I lived just a few miles away. Now, 20 years later and living in Ireland, I returned to discover that fortunately, the pub has remained unchanged in a delightful way. Everything was the same - the wonderful soup bubbling away on the bar, Adnams beer straight from the barrel, and the roast beef being carved on the bar by the original landlord, David (who came out of retirement for one day only). Even the same candlestick covered in wax was in its familiar place on the same table. Belinda the goose may no longer patrol the car park, but can now be seen stuffed in the public bar. This pub is perfect for a light lunch, offering fantastic...

The Queen 's Head advertised last December for 'friendly and enthusiastic staff '. Judging by our experience, none have yet been found. Having grown up in the area, I first visited this pub as a child, and my family have returned periodically over the years. It was therefore a shame to find on our most recent lunchtime visit that although the rustic fare and surroundings retained their former quality, the warm welcome that I remembered was absent. We were ignored for a while at the bar by the two men who stood there making sandwiches, then told that someone else would take our order shortly. This didn 't happen, and eventually one of the two who had been ignoring us condescended to ask what...
