"Anywhere that does good cheese is a hit with me. If it also sells good beer, frankly I begin to become emotional. Add delicious cakes and savouries and my happiness is complete. Rattle Ghyll has all of these things, in spades and there is much more that looks wonderful but that I didn't have the chance to try. The cakes really are superb homemade and fresh. I particularly enjoyed the spiced fruit flapjack. There is a good range of bottled local beers (including some dark brews, much to my pleasure). Just because it looked so appetising, I bought a piece of vegetable fritata which was savoury and delicious. I save the cheese until last because it was the best. There is a large selection of local, national and international cheese on offer, all of which looked tempting but I wanted to try local produce. There were half a dozen or so Cumbrian cheeses of which I chose a blue, a soft cheese and a farmhouse cheddar. All of these were wonderful on the sort of level you might expect in an award winning cheese and the soft cheese had me in raptures! I think it was called Crofton. I may be wrong but I think this deli is aimed at the vegetarian and vegan community. Certainly, I saw a lot of produce labelled as suitable for those particular dietary preferences and do not remember seeing any meat. Don't let that put you off if, like me, you are more omnivorous because really good veg or vegan food can compete with more carnivorous options on equal terms and there is nothing wishy washy or compromised about any of the great food on offer here. The staff are very friendly and enthusiastic about their produce. Highly recommended."

So good, the salad box was so filling that the flapjack had to be kept for the next day's hike up Silver Howe. Yes it can be busy and it isn't cheap but quality is superb.

We often pop in to the Rattle Ghyll before a long walk and stock our backpacks with warm pie. The smell of cheese and onion or macaroni cheese pie as we walk up the hills really whets the appetite for when we get to the top. Yummmmmmy

FRUIT SCONE.. No! Unlawful false advertising we would say. What is the point in offering a fruit scone when it is laden with so much cinnamon that nothing other than the spice can be tasted? Undedible and uneaten. We rated it as the worst scone ever.

We had read about this deli online before our visit to Ambelside so we thought we would stop off to see what we could get for lunch to take on our walks in the Lakes. We visited twice during our stay having a pie both times as the first was so tasty (it also travelled well! . The apple and almond cake was delicious too. Ver carta

No longer a café, but a deli. The deli stocks a lovely selection of higher end foods. Some foods, such as oats and muesli, are available to purchase in your own containers. The cheeses were lovely. The pies, especially the Lincolnshire cheese and spinach pie, and the salads, tasted lovely. The bread was good. They also sell sandwiches and wraps.

I twice bought a pie here during a week's stay in Ambleside. While not cheap, they were vegetarian, tasty and very generously filled (and much much better value than Ambleside's rather over-priced restaurants). They also sell a range of salads in pots (the roasted veg were excellent) and local bottled beer (at a slightly lower price some some of the more specialist shops).

The food from the Rattle Ghyll is always fresh and extremely tasty. There is a varying range of delicious pies and pastries and a board of imaginative sandwich options. Yesterday we had Brie and damson chutney sandwich Mac ‘n’ cheese pie (not to be missed) Mini Brie and caramelised onion quiche All excellent. The salad pots are also excellent All good is vegetarian (plenty of vegan too) and the man behind me was offered a big choice of gluten free options. Service is always with a smile too. Thank you Ver carta

Popped in for some bits to take back to eat in our cottage, but were put off by the prices of many of the non fresh items. Got a couple of pies which were ok, but nothing special. However, the cheeses were fantastic. We bought many local cheeses from many different deli's across the Lakes region and the range and quality in this place was the best by far. The blues particularly were splendid and as we drove back home munching on some cheeses from other places, we wished we'd gone back here to restock instead !

Bought pies, salads, porridge and chocolate to take back to rental cottage. Absolutely wonderful food actually nicer than the eye watering costly meal we'd had out in Grasmere the day before and for a fraction of the price. Pies were Lancashire cheese and onion and the Dhal Gobi. Delicious. The owners were lovely too even though my attempts at the self serve bit were poor. And the chocolate selection wow. You will definitely turn your nose up at the overpriced, sugar laden stuff sold elsewhere in Ambleside after eating the brands they stock. Not cheap but actually worth every penny. You get what you pay for and this place stocks healthy, tasty fuel not calorific rubbish.

"We were sure to book ahead for a table of 4 for 5.15 as it was a late Sunday roast we were fully aware that not everything would be available so it was no surprise when we were told that there was only gammon left for the roast option however there was still fish and chips homemade steak pie or vegetable lasagne. We happily opted for 3 gammon roast dinners and a homemade steak pie with mash (you get the choice of which potato you'd like) The food arrived piping hot with plenty of everything and it was so so tasty you could really tell everything was lovingly made from scratch for the roast the potatoes came both roasted and mashed with cauliflower, broccoli and carrot and swede mash. A generous helping of gammon and a large Yorkshire pudding with gravy that was clearly made with the juices as it was so flavourful. The steak pie was brilliant too homemade with large chunks of steak and a choice of potato and whether you'd like the same veg as that with the roast or with peas. This also came with gravy. For dessert there was a choice of either chocolate fudge cake, caramel apple pie or sticky toffee pudding and you had the choice of either cream, ice cream or custard. 2 of us got it with custard and 2 of us got it with ice cream and it wasn't overbearingly sweet it was perfect with a delicious caramel top! We all thoroughly enjoyed all the food and the drinks and service and will be back again one day if we find ourselves holidaying here again"
