"I really like Ethiopian food and was looking forward to this visit as I had recently visited another Ethiopian/ Eritrean restaurant close by called the Red Sea. My first impression of Abyssinia from the outside was not really great. I think the entrance signboard and façade looked outdated and could definitely improve apparently the restaurant has been around for a decade). looks a bit like a Kebab take away shop. But this was ok and could be overlooked as the interiors were a different story altogether. As in really really great! Rustic, authentic decor from the ceiling to the seating to the menu card right up to the toilet entrance! Really loved it! I love authenticity and this place oozed of it! the servers were also nice and courteous. We ordered the menu dégustation which has a bit of everything and it even looked great when it was brought. Not too long a wait. So all great so far but that’s where the plot was lost. The food was cold !!!And of course the flavours don’t really come out with cold food. This was a real let down and up until this point we were really enjoying. I guess we should have sent the food back, but the damage had been done. So from then on the shine rubbed off and we finished and left with the same take- away feeling one would get from a mediocre dining experience. So Abyssinia really are close to getting it all right but simple execution mistakes such as cold food are not doing them any favours. As in if I had to make a choice of going for Ethiopian food In Lausanne, I would probably go back to The Red Sea which is just a 100 mts away. The ambience there is not comparable at all but the food was much better."

Authentic and nice African food, quite close to the center of Lausanne! One of the fee Ethiopian restaurants in Switzerland! Recommend of you want to try real african good! Nice service.

The service in the restaurant is average, but the food is good. If you don 't know ethiopian food, I advice the Menu découverte which enables you to discover this kind of food for a faire price. The decoration of the place is nice and traditional. Note that, like in Ethiopia, you will have to eat with you hands!

Have been contemplating from a long time about this cuisine. The food was fine but thought that the vegetarian dishes other than lentils lacked variety for the price. Service and ambience was acceptable nothing extraordinary. Overall was not so great but can't either say was bad. Perhaps go their once again and then have an second opinion.

While living in Lausanne I went a couple of times to this place. I don't pretend to be a connaisseur of Ethiopian cuisine but for me it was a pretty nice experience. Hygiene lovers, beware, food there is eaten with fingers from a common plate which in my opinion makes it even tastier. So if this practice repels you just don't go there. The proposed dishes are all rather copious and the variety of tastes didn't remind of anything I ate before. Price wise it's not really cheap but I think the experience worth it.

I love Ethiopian food and was excited to see a restaurant in Lausanne. As my fiancé is allergic to gluten, I was excited to introduce him to a naturally gluten-free place where he could eat the famed dish of Injera. Low and behold, this restaurant goes the cheap route by replacing the teff flour with wheat flour...and then still charges and arm and a leg!!! Unacceptable! I am sure many people that don't understand French have eatn here assuming it was gluten-free as it should be. Save yourself and to the delightful little pizza place across the street that does offer gluten-free tasty pizzas!

I've been there many times to get my Ethiopian food fix, but every time, I ask myself if there isn't a more welcoming Ethiopian or Eritrean place to go in the area. As always, the food is good, though perhaps a little light on the main dishes and heavy on the cold salad-like fillers that take up the empty space on the underlying ingera. The waiter was somewhat zombie-like and didn't respond very well to a complaint I made in an extremely politely manner considering what I was complaining about. Positive: Tasty food. Negatives: Big on fillers, somewhat skimpy on main dishes; sad waiter; despite all that, not cheap.

We went there for a family dinner as we have often walked past the restaurant and it seemed interesting. The biggest disappointment was the fact that the vegeterian plater that has been ordered by one of us (which costs 30CHF) was just a handfull of lentils and some other vegetables. The taste of the food was ok, but paying this price is rediculous for this sort of food and the little quantity of it! We also ordered several meat dishes, some were good, some were chewy. Basically the quality of the food is not consistent with every dish. I would not recommend this place to anyone and i am certainly not coming back there again.

On our first ever visit to Lausanne, we looked up restaurants on Maps and this one popped up so we said why not, since we absolutely love Ethiopian food. The atmosphere was absolutely depressing. Dim lights (not in a good way) and dusty corners. We chose a Menu Dégustation for 2 people, the price in front of it was 38 CHF which seemed quite OK. We've been to better restaurants in Geneva which had similar prices. After our food arrived, we were disappointed in the mediocre quality and quantity of it. It was meh. Not bad, just meh. We didn't finish our plate, and after a more mediocre dessert, we asked for the check and to our surprise, it was 86-ish francs! Apparently, 38 CHF was the price pe...

"Au Charbon is family managed restaurant, set in a pleasant and quiet part of Lausanne, easily reached on the bus, if like me, you are touring. The restaurant is ‘cosy’ and the owners have maximised the number of seats available, which sounds like me...spinning a cramped venue but it actually works out okay. We had sufficient room to relax and eat without imposing on our neighbouring tables, so the efficient spacing added to the atmosphere and the wine waiter added character. The restaurant has a traditional pizzeria menu with no surprises with the choice of pizza, steaks etc. All our choices were well presented, cooked exactly to request and delicious. Portion sizes were just right too On the down side, the table service was very slow, it took around an hour for the first course and one dish was wrong when it eventually arrived but we put that down to being busy. The lady serving was also a bit too presumptuous that the change from the bill would be her tip and she didn’t return the change, eventually coming back to confirm if this was so. In summary, I enjoyed my meal and time at Au Charbon, they seem to have earned their reputation from being consistent in serving nicely presented dishes that are cooked well. The higher end options are a bit on the pricey side if you are on holiday, especially when considering this is a pizzeria (a steak costing CHF). However most restaurants of this type in Lausanne are similarly priced and it is what it is."
