"Dear Mr Riley. Whilst you were on vacation I stayed at your hotel, with my partner, for three nights from Tuesday 20th August. We had been looking forward to some excellent food in the evenings, especially having been informed by friends and family that the 1559 restaurant had received high praise from the restaurant guides and had 2 AA Rosettes, not an easy task to achieve. I only wish I had done further research as it turns out the awards were given to the former management at Marriott. In all honesty the service and food on that first night was a complete travesty. On check in we were told it would be advisable to book a table but that none were available until 8 pm. Fair enough, that gave us plenty of time to have a look around the grounds. Arrived at the restaurant entrance at 8 pm to be told by the young lady hostess that there would be a further delay as the kitchen had just received an order for a table of 10 or 12. We were seated at 8.30. Menus given, nothing like our expectations, totally boring. 8.40 pm our order was taken, including an order for wine and water. Someone came along to tell us there would be a further delay. To be honest, if I had not previously had a drink at that point we would have left to find somewhere local to eat. We waited, and waited, and waited! I had ordered a starter of calamari, and we both ordered the sea bass fillet for main course. at 9.15 pm our main courses were served, by a lady who might have been the restaurant manager or duty manager. I asked where my starter was. She took the sea bass back to the kitchen. I asked her to ensure the sea bass would not just be re-heated and served again and that fresh fish would be prepared. At 9.20 pm my starter was served: 5 pieces of ready battered squid rings with a little salad an mayo dip. For a 2 Rosette restaurant I would have expected at least fresh battered squid rather than the factory produced stuff from Brakes or 3663, especially at the prices charged. Still waiting for the wine! It was delivered at 9.25 pm as the starter plate was cleared. Our sea bass main course was delivered again at 9.30 pm. We expected crispy skin on one side and succulent flesh on the other, a simple cooking process. What we received was an overcooked and dry fillet of fish with some crushed potatoes. We ate what we could in order to satisfy basic hunger and left at 9.45 having paid our bill. Apart from one apology when taking away my starter plate nothing more was said by the manageress or staff. I have never seen a more incompetent team working in a restaurant, the young, scruffily dressed, lady hostess did little more than wander around looking confused; the male waiters, I think two of them, were equally incompetent. The next two nights you lost significant revenue as we decided to eat elsewhere. I can heartily recommend the near by Blue Boar Inn. Excellent food and service. On the plus side, we had booked B&B. The following morning we rather anxiously went down to the dining room. We were welcomed at the host desk and the buffet system explained and then asked to find our own table. The food was much better and certainly comparable to many other hotels of a similar type. Unfortunately, replenishment of the buffet was more haphazard. I asked for more yogurt and some lemon slices for my tea. It came out, eventually. The hot food was of a good standard. The room was comfortable and clean and well serviced except on the last morning when we noticed we had only been given one bath towel. I went downstairs and helped my self from a bale of clean towels on the trolleys cluttering the lobby. All in all, it seems to me that the hotel has been treated as something of a cash cow and maintenance neglected. There are areas that have not been looked after well and would suggest a carefully thought out plan of maintenance is conducted. As it stands, and based on our personal experience, we cannot justify more than one trip adviser points. Yours sincerely Norman Dinsdale"

I initially came here to eat but changed my mind after waiting a long time to be served at the bar for a drink. The prices were also very high. There was no ambiance and the staff appeared disinterested. Quite a peculiar place!

The restaurant is in a lovely setting with well-prepared tables and nicely presented tea. The scones were fresh and delicious, and the mini mince pies were enjoyable. However, the sandwiches were a bit dry and could have been better.

You would think a 4 star hotel would do a good range of food. The menu is very limited, no real cooking involved, burgers pasta etc And when it does arrive it is of very poor quality. Complaints are not dealt with in a professional manner, if you don 't like what we do, tough

I’ve eaten her a few times in the evening when staying on business at the hotel. Waiting times are generally long and the food pretty average. The starters are particularly underwhelming. A safe bet main is the Sirloin steak. I’d avoid most other options. Most visits start with an apology about what’s not on the menu tonight. As I say, stick with the steak and go elsewhere if staying more than one night. Good luck peeps!

Visited here for dinner and breakfast as we were staying at the hotel. Dinner... Staff were friendly and efficient. Service was quick and the food was very good my steak was cooked to perfection. Breakfast.. It is a self service setup where you can help yourself to a huge selection of cereals, pastries, fruit, yogurts, salmon, eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns ect.. could not fault a thing food was all cooked lovely. Well done to all 5*.

We opted for the three-course meal with a bottle of house wine, priced at £59 per couple. Since I don't consume meat, I requested a salad as my main dish, which was quite mediocre but a good deal for the restaurant. The other main dish was a large steak that was unfortunately tough and flavorless. Despite the restaurant not being too busy, we had to wait thirty minutes for our desserts. Eventually, we had them delivered to our room, but it took another half an hour for them to arrive. The meringues I ordered were disappointingly hard and seemed to be store-bought. Overall, our experience was underwhelming.

We were staying at sprowston manor and we're planning on having a meal with my parents who still live in Norwich, so rather than going out we decided to eat in, I'm glad we did. The staff were delightful, friendly and helpful. I had the scallops with black pudding bonbons which is always a good test of the chef and I have to say they were cooked perfectly, melt in the mouth. The norfolk pork combo was superb with perfectly cooked local carrots. My partner had the salmon with samphire (a Norfolk delicacy and rarity) and again it was perfectly cooked. We rarely have dessert but the menu sounded great. I actually had the chessboard with 3 huge chunks of fantastic cheeses the mousse like quality...

"I decided to surprise my daughter and take her for a deluxe spa break . We couldn’t fault the afternoon tea and massages at the spa these were brilliant . We were very excited about our evening meal but left feeling very deflated . On arrival no staff told us what we could have with our package, we received the wrong drinks menu. After around 20 minutes someone finally came over and asked if we wanted a drink. We ordered and asked for tap water too . One of the drinks arrived but the water and other one never did so we had to find a young bar man who was rushing about and ask him . He was lovely and went and got them for us . After a long time of waiting bread and something in a little pot was plonked on our table , no explanation what it was , we thought we had got someone else’s starter . Finally we ordered our starters it was lovely but no spoon for my daughters soup so again we had to search for staff , plates took absolutely ages to be collected, mains came finally after 1.5 hours. It was lovely but the atmosphere was bad as other customers were getting fed up of waiting too. Finally got dessert and after we finished we sat patiently waiting for our plates to be taken and bill given ,as a lot on the menu which we liked you had to pay extra for .I thought this was ridiculous thinking back how much this break had cost me . After staff walking past us and ignoring us and the empty plates I had had enough and went to find someone to put it on our room bill . This experience was not the lovely bday treat I had expected for my daughters 21st disappointing is an understatement!!!"
