"Visited on a bright, November Thursday lunchtime with my parents. Have been coming here for years: this time was a shock. Menu has shrunk: now extremely limited and basic. Dad 's Ham Egg and Chips was okay, but just slices of processed ham, chips and 2fried eggs, without even a garnish pricey for that. Ma had liver and bacon: it was really good, esp the gravy and the mash; but ruined by the veg the green beans undercooked, and the carrots were absolutely raw. Shameful that there 's only one vegetarian main, and that it 's just a basic tomato and mozarella pasta; so I had that, but with olive bread. The home made olive bread was gorgeous I mean, really spectacularly good, small sticks, crisp on the outside, nice and soft on the inside, with just the right level of olivey flavour and richness. Which was just as well, as it 's all I ate. The pasta consisted of a bowl of overcooked, limp fusilli, sitting in a couple of centimetres of watery tomato sauce , with a layer of melted mozarella stuck to the bottom. The watery tomato tasted very strongly of dried herbs; and that was ALL it tasted of. It was far too watery and insipid to do more to the pasta than make it wet. The invisible cheese was only dredged up when I attempted to stir the dish, and stuck to my fork in strings so I had to wind it around and then scrape it off with my teeth to actually eat any of it. The entire dish was inedible: not just not very nice but, actually, really quite nasty. The waitress, who was lovely (the service today was as good as always , asked me why I hadn 't eaten the pasta to provide feedback to the chef , so I politely told her. I did not expect a response; but was informed a few minutes later by the, now a little uncomfortable looking, waitress that she had been asked to pass on that the chef ...had made the sauce herself and that she was ...sorry it was not to my taste . While perfectly obvious that she had ...made the sauce herself and how, I struggle to imagine who would be prepared to eat this disgraceful slop at all let alone find it tasty. I was really quite annoyed at getting this patronising, defensive response to an opinion I had only expressed because I was asked for it especially after a disappointing experience with the only main meal that I could eat off the menu. I struggled not to walk into the kitchen at this point and tell the chef to her face that, if this really is the best she can do, I would be happy spend ten minutes explaining to her how to turn a concasse of tomato into a simple, but delicious, pasta sauce; and how to then make an appetising basic vegetarian meal out of it. Though underwhelmed and disappointed (and annoyed and hungry, in my case , we pressed on to desert, which is usually excellent here. The Baileys ' Cheesecake was really rich and delicious, without being over sweet; the Lemon Meringue Roulade was good light and lemony; but my Ma thought its delicate flavour was overwhelmed by the sickly strawberry sauce drizzled over it. I 've had the bread and butter pudding here before and it is (was absolutely to die for literally the best I have ever tasted. This time, it turned out to be mostly dry pieces of rather tough white bread, layered with hard dried fruit, sugar and spices, sitting (inexplicably on a thin layer of revolting semi raw, pastry; with little evidence that any of it had seen much in the way of egg custard or butter. Again, not just not very nice but absolutely disgusting. At this point we decided to give up, skip coffee, and just pay and leave as fast as possible. They seemed pleased with themselves for not charging us for the inedible pasta; but there seemed little point in us mentioning the vile bread and butter pudding...as by then it was obvious that their (new? chef cannot actually cook at least, not to any decent, consistent, commerial standard but is also rather defensive about it. It 's a great shame, as when the food was good today, it was really excellent. But most of it was just ordinary and pretty bland; and when it was bad, it was truly terrible. Perhaps the chef was just having an off day who knows. In any case, we had travelled from Ipswich specifically to have lunch here as a treat; but after today, despite more than three decades of our family eating at the Black Boy when we visit this part of Essex, we will not be returning. I don 't suppose the chef will care, really, if her food is not to our taste ."

Having visited a few pubs over the last few years I couldn't fault the hospitality of the 19century pub. Not only did Dan, Andrea, and Martin (brothers and a sister trio) make us feel really welcome but they also let us stay in their...

A very nice restaurant and very friendly service. We visited first for drinks and then booked to return next day for a meal. The only criticism I have is that it's not really vegetarian or vegan friendly. There were only two items on the menu,...

We have lived in Clacton on sea for the last 2 years and we eat out a lot, but we recently stumbled upon this gem, warm welcome great food and service, we have visited 3 times before I have done this review just to make sure, you can’t review on one visit I believe. Well done the black boy! Highly recommended.

"We came as a group of 10 for my Mother in Laws 60th birthday, and I must say it was a shambles. Please let me say, that we have been many times prior to this and have had excellent food and fantastic service, so not sure what has happened. Firstly, my Father in Law had to pay a deposit for 12 of us, which was absolutely fine, however, one of those was for a baby who would not have been eating. Unfortunately the mother and baby were unable to attend due to illness, so we lost £10 of the deposit. I would like to Firstly ask, why was we charged for a baby, who was never going to be eating? Secondly, we asked for a pitcher of beer, and when this was served, we were given 3 (out of 4) of the most dirtiest glasses. The beer from previous drinkers was still in the bottom, hence the staining of brown at the bottom of the glass. This is totally unacceptable, and this could actually cause serious health issues to people drinking from them. The waitress brought the first two starters out, prawn cocktails, and dumped it infront of a parson who didn 't even order it, and even after we told her who they were for, just left it there.....would you not have picked this up and actually served it to the correct person? The prawn cocktails came out on a slate and as much as this was very nicely presented, knowing that someone with only the use of one arm had ordered this, it would have been a better option to put this on a plate, so food could be scraped to the edge of the plate and picked up. Rather than a husband having to put his fork up against his wife 's and juggle getting the food on. That 's just a food for thought, incase you have anyone else in this position in the future. We then had the mains served. Out of the 10 orders, were four full racks of ribs. One of these came out as a half. We asked the waitress if this was correct and she said, sorry, she would get the other half out. This came out AFTER the person had finsihed their dinner, which meant they had to take this away in a take away box. Seemed like there was no urgency to correct the error immediately. The burgers, I am sorry to say, are an actual joke. The burgers themselves looked like the small ones you get from Iceland. But yet, are being charged at nearly £14. That was shocking. The chips, were edible, but burnt. And again, please think about putting it on a plate (or atleast asking the person eating it what they would prefer) and not a wooden chopping board. A chopping board is for chopping after all...... We then asked for our cake to come out, so we could sing happy birthday and blow the candles out. We got told yes no problem, but you will be charged £2 per person for eating there at no point had we mentioned we wanted to eat it there and had actually already mentioned this prior to handing over the cake. We opted not to have a dessert as we felt quite deflated to be honest. When the bill came out, I asked if the 3 for 2 drinks had been deducted and she said no, thats only Friday 's . I think you need to make that clearer on your menu, as it just states Monday... Tuesday...etc and the Friday 's. But your drinks deal just says Evenings you need to amend that to specifically say Friday evenings as it is in fact false advertisement on your part. The bill came up, minus the £50 deposit (still baffled why you charged £5 for a baby) and to my surprise a £27 service charge. I asked for this to be removed, as I find this quite shocking to put on any bill. A service charge is not a given, it is a discretion by those who are paying. You cannot expect anyone to pay a service charge if they feel the service has not been up to scratch. As I previously said above, we have been here multiple times before and always had great service and exceptional food. Last night, just was not the same. It is a shame, as we come here for birthdays and we will be thinking twice now, due to the above."
