"Fancied somewhere different. Rang to book a table, they kindly squeezed us in on a busy Friday night. The place was buzzing, with a great atmosphere. A good mix of diners; families, couples and friends catching up. Plenty of staff serving and behind the bar, they all seemed very organised. We were served promptly by Kacey, who was very polite and friendly and helped to answer our questions. On their recommendation we tried the deep fried gherkins.. they were gorgeous! Generous enough portion for two to share as a starter, came with sweet chilli dip, scrumptious! Had ham egg and chips for one and pie with chips and veg for other. All beautifully cooked, generous portions, no skimping on quality.. in particular the ham was “proper” nice ham and the veg was the nicest we’ve eaten out in a long while, especially the red cabbage, again “proper” just like mum used to do it! Finished with a brulee each, it was just perfect. Really happy with everything, our thanks to all the team at The Brook… we will definitely be back"

I meet up with a mate here probably 5/6 times a year. We walk our dogs and have a catch up over a beer. Always good friendly service, can’t fault the place. Friendly regulars in here too. Well done all.

Even on a cold Tuesday lunchtime the pub was so busy. Everybody enjoying their food and drinks. Service was perfect, and good atmosphere. The portions were huge, maybe too large for most . The menu and specials board were very tempting. Well done the Brook, we will return soon.

Nice surroundings, pleasant and helpful staff. Food is good and fresh, the only drawback is the prices they charge are on the steep side. A meat pie with vegetables at over £17 is not good value. All the other dishes are expensive too with burger and chips, fish and chips over £16. Heaven help you if you went to the specials board as most items over £20.

Was literally no place better than this so far. Younger boy serving was professional, accurate and polite and the food came absolutely perfect. Not a long wait and it was insane. The pie was just fab, mushroom and truffle oil, and had lots of gravy just as you would want! The loaded fries side were ordered as main and these were large and perfectly covered! The whole experience was just perfect and I can't wait to go back!!

My mother and a friend went for lunch yesterday, a lot of items were not available so the both had Fish and Chips. By all accounts it was frozen fish that had been cooked, the batter was greasy and pappy, the chips were undercooked. All in all it wasn't a pleasant experience. My mother who used to be a F&C shop owner left most of hers on the plate. My mother said it has been going downhill for a while and this will be her last visit.

"Checking in to a hotel in an unfamiliar place, it is tempting to book one 's first evening meal in the hotel 's restaurant (unless, of course, one has had chance to research the alternatives beforehand . This may seem a safe option, but is often a mistake, as it was on my visit to Ipswich. Had I only known that a minute 's walk along the quayside would have taken me to Mariners, I should have eaten there twice rather than only once! A floating restaurant can often prove to be a bit of a gimmick, but Mariners seemed to get good reviews so, on night two, I gave it a try. A beautifully restored and maintained Dutch customs gunboat from 1900, with gleaming brass and polished woodwork, the restaurant offers a limited, but well-constructed, menu to satisfy most tastes. Being aboard a boat, I opted for seafood, and was not disappointed. There being an R in the month , mussels were a good choice for my starter, followed by a seafood skewer , presented with just enough theatre to be amusing but not over the top. Not fine dining , perhaps, but well-prepared, nicely presented and very satisfying dishes at reasonable prices. A limited wine list, perhaps a bit on the pricey side, but the Picpoul de Pinet proved to be an excellent accompaniment without over-stressing the credit card. Service struck just the right balance between politeness and friendliness. My fellow diners embraced the whole age spectrum (I was by far the oldest! weighted perhaps towards the younger end, the common factor being that everyone (myself included was clearly enjoying themself. There are many other dining venues along the Ipswich quayside that my brief visit did not allow me to try, but Mariners can be recommended as a safe and enjoyable bet."
