The Governor's Hall Bodmin Jail

It's a great place overall, I loved the dark walk. I don't suggest for children under 11 years of age. the dark walk is amazing, super realistic and it has a dark storyline. It takes up to 2 hours to complete the entire walk.

We went to Bodmin jail last week on a rainy day, and had a great time well worth a visit. We also had lunch in the on-site bar/restaurant, service was excellent and food and drinks were very reasonable for a tourist attraction. I had the Mac and cheese and it was amazing the best I’ve ever had.

This is worth a visit and is well made. They’ve obviously spent a lot of money with the attraction and things to see. A lot of history is explained and I liked being in the same cells as some of the famous prisoners. I just wish there was more to see, however that’s been converted to hotel. Even being allowed more of the grounds or higher up cells would make it better. The staff was very friendly and there’s a cool Souvenir store there.

Not many restaurants allow dogs indoors, but this one does make an exception. Dogs are very welcome in the cafe (though not in the upstairs restaurant). The parking situation is a bit tricky; however, I was able to find street parking just a five-minute walk away. The jail itself has a bit of a spooky vibe, and I had to remind my kids not to read some of the more graphic descriptions of the hanging offenses. Overall, it's definitely worth a visit!

I visited with a group ranging in age from 9 to 73, and every single one of us loved it! The building is truly fascinating, especially the cellars filled with interesting facts to uncover. The restaurant, Governor's Hall, has been refurbished to an impressive standard, and the staff at the reception in the café/shop were excellent. I couldn't be more impressed with the place. I will definitely be recommending it and look forward to seeing the proposed new development. I will surely visit again when I’m in Cornwall.

I just got back from an amazing 'After Dark' evening at Bodmin Jail. The chefs served up some incredibly delicious food—the stuffed pepper was absolutely the highlight! Afterwards, our knowledgeable guides, Kirsten Honey and Mark Rablin, took us on a fascinating tour of the jail. It was fantastic to learn about its history and even experience some paranormal activity. I highly recommend this experience! Just a heads up: it can get a bit chilly inside the jail, so make sure to dress in layers! Overall, it was a wonderful tour to be a part of!

The hotel is absolutely stunning with beautiful interiors and lovely old features in the building. Staff were super friendly and the food was delicious. They were also so accommodating for animals and even looked after our dog for a few hours. The wheelchair accessible bathroom in the room was one of the best we’ve had with a lovely open shower and all necessary adaptions. The bedroom needs some accessibility help as the bed was too high and also too close to the cupboard so a wheelchair user has no access to cupboard, fridge and safe, for this we’ve taken off a star.

We booked the Wednesday afternoon tour online. It cost a bit more, but the two-hour experience was well worth it as we were captivated the entire time. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and shared fascinating stories about the history of the gaol. We were free to explore at our own pace afterwards. We enjoyed a few drinks in the Governor's Hall, which used to be the chapel. The staff were very friendly and polite, and the gift shop had items for every budget. Overall, we spent about four and a half hours there, and it was such a delightful experience! We felt it offered excellent value for money and would highly recommend the tour.

We found both exhibits very interesting, and the window displays were quite captivating. There were many informative boards that encouraged us to pause and read. The exhibits were available for viewing five days a week. The middle floor had two lower and two upper levels, providing a nice layout. We even took the time to watch a film about Charles Hampton. I’ve seen a few negative reviews about the visit, but I can only share my own positive experience. Our entire visit was enjoyable and fulfilling.
