"Three star hotel? Only in price! The Redgarth exceeds all expectations. Our favorite hotel of the trip, wish we could have stayed an extra day. Huge parking lot, beautiful garden set in the peaceful village of Oldmendrum. This boutique hotel with just 6 rooms is nestled in an upscale neighborhood. Our Deluxe Double Room with Balcony was very spacious with comfortable chairs and coffee table, desk, king sized bed, shelves, and nightstands. The bathroom was similarly large with tub/shower combo and plenty of room for our personal toiletries. The hotel and rooms were tastefully and colorfully decorated. We stayed in the “Yew” room (loved this, being a tree-lover). The front view was of the staff parking lot (not busy) and the neighborhood. The back view from the bathroom was the wider view of the valley. The room next to ours (Ash) had a better balcony out the back. One of the best features of this room was the skylight with light blocking shades so we were still able to go to sleep at a reasonable hour amid the late sunset. We were able to walk from the hotel around the town though a car is required to get to Oldmeldrum. The restaurant was excellent. The bar offered a large selection of Scottish made gins and whiskies. This was a favorite spot for locals. The owner and host, Stuart, is extremely welcoming and friendly—we felt like family! Dinner was excellent. I had the Sunday roast—marvelous. We chose to eat both nights’ dinners at The Redgarth. Included breakfast was cold—fruit and yogurt and then pastries, cheese and cold cuts—very filling and fresh! We highly recommend this hotel."

"On a dark rainy Friday night I visited Skippers for the first time in a while, I did see an A4 notice full of text on the door but it was lashing rain, dark, I was wearing a mask, my specs were steaming up and I had my hood pulled tight so didn’t stand outside to read it. If I had stood and taken the time to read the notice I wouldn’t be writing this review but that is not really the point here. I entered the shop, used the hand sanitiser and walked up to the order window and placed an order only to be asked if I had phoned. I hadn’t phoned and was told, with no apology, that they were only taking phone orders between 5 and 7pm as they were really busy. I turned to walk out and as I did the owner, in a loud voice, said to his young staff and the one customer in the shop “there goes another one stomping out”. I am not normally a confrontational person but by the time I reached the door I was seeing red after his most unnecessary comment (I consider it a form of harassment). I turned and asked him what he had just said, he replied with something like there is a note on the door, my reply was that I hadn’t been in for a while and had been unaware of the fact and that with an attitude like his I certainly would not be back. I made a suggestion on his Facebook page that he pin a note on it regarding phone orders only 5 to 7 pm my comment/suggestion was deleted without reply or apology. This owner’s attitude to customer relations is non existent and constructive criticism seems lost on him. I will not be back to this establishment but I doubt that the owner really cares."

"Ballater is a beautiful gem of a town tucked in the Cairngorms and well worth a visit. We stayed at the Balmoral Inn which is styled like a hunting fishing lodge with beautiful decor and comfy furniture. The rooms are sumptuous and the bathrooms spacious. Parking is free on the street outside. Reception staff were welcoming and friendly and as soon as we arrived we wished we booked for 2 nights not just 1. The tea coffee making facilities in the rooms included 2 Tunnocks tea cakes and 2 Tunnocks wafers very generous and authentically Scottish. We dined in the restaurant and the meal was delicious, however the young staff could benefit from a bit more training. One of us ordered a starter but the waitress didn’t note this so our mains arrived after 45mins but they offered to bring it as a salad alongside mains which wasn’t ideal. When we ordered a bottle of red wine the waiter brought it and just plonked it on the table leaving the screw cap on, and we requested the bill be split across the 2 rooms but this never happened. Fantastic live music played through dinner and breakfasts were delicious and staff at breakfast were excellent and very efficient and helpful (one of which was waitress from night before so excellent improvement). We played twilight golf at Ballater GC just a few minutes walk up the same road and the course was stunning with incredible views."
