"First of all apologies to all those poor and terrible reviews that I ignored and shouldn’t have! Within half an hour of arriving we contemplated going home. Check in was a rushed affair with no exchange of pleasantries. The main focus of the female owner was for us to get our breakfast and dinner pre orders in ASAP. When I returned back through I started ordering breakfast and a comment was made about ‘that’s a lot’. When I said cereal and cooked breakfast, twice more comments were made about ordering a lot of food and was I sure I wanted so much. As someone who struggles with my body image I was mortified and asked was I not allowed to order what I had. It was pointed out I would be charged extra for cereal!! I ended up cancelling this more through embarrassment than anything else. (I have to point out here that we had spent two nights previously at the lovely Carnoustie Hotel. The Lodge was £50 dearer per room than Carnoustie who had no surcharges on anything and whose staff were super attentive. I’ve also worked in hotels so know about customer service) The room at the lodge whilst large and looking into the loch was not particularly amazing. On closer inspection it wasn’t very clean in corners and one of the face cloths was brown rather than white. The room above was occupied on second night and the room is not well insulated so we could hear every footstep, etc. I also felt that the shared walkway outside left the room with no privacy. We went for dinner in the very outdated restaurant/bar on the first night. There was a total of five other guests and no atmosphere at all. We had just sat down when our starters arrived, then my husband just finished the last bite of his when the plate was removed as clearly our main course was ready. This is what I hate about pre ordering the food had clearly been kept warming. Our plates cleared again no pleasantries, no checking if it was ok, nothing. Our sum total time for what was a basic pub grub dinner was 25 min start to finish! It was so disappointing and rushed that we went into Aboyne the second night for tea. Breakfast wasn’t much better Curt questions, overcooked bacon and black pudding, our dirty plates left in front of us so we didn’t feel welcome to sit and have a relaxing cup of tea to start the day. Just absolutely no finesse or luxury at all. I have no issue paying astronomical prices if you get what you pay for an you absolutely do not get value for money here and if not careful could run up a number of surcharges. The lodge is, as one other review states, a complete rip off especially when compared to our stay at Carnoustie and other much nicer hotels. I notice some people saying they felt like family well I must be the black sheep as I did not feel at all welcome at this place and was on edge whenever i was anywhere near the female owner after her attitude to me from the outset. The male owner didn’t even speak to me the whole stay and when my husband handed in key he was only concerned with had we paid no check made if everything had been ok. In fact we both felt that the owners were more focused on making money than customer service. So in conclusion take a lesson from my mistake and DO NOT stay here there are far more nicer places to go for a lot less money!! Read the other negative reviews as they are all pretty accurate and I wished I had listened to them."

The Redgarth

"Three star hotel? Only in price! The Redgarth exceeds all expectations. Our favorite hotel of the trip, wish we could have stayed an extra day. Huge parking lot, beautiful garden set in the peaceful village of Oldmendrum. This boutique hotel with just 6 rooms is nestled in an upscale neighborhood. Our Deluxe Double Room with Balcony was very spacious with comfortable chairs and coffee table, desk, king sized bed, shelves, and nightstands. The bathroom was similarly large with tub/shower combo and plenty of room for our personal toiletries. The hotel and rooms were tastefully and colorfully decorated. We stayed in the “Yew” room (loved this, being a tree-lover). The front view was of the staff parking lot (not busy) and the neighborhood. The back view from the bathroom was the wider view of the valley. The room next to ours (Ash) had a better balcony out the back. One of the best features of this room was the skylight with light blocking shades so we were still able to go to sleep at a reasonable hour amid the late sunset. We were able to walk from the hotel around the town though a car is required to get to Oldmeldrum. The restaurant was excellent. The bar offered a large selection of Scottish made gins and whiskies. This was a favorite spot for locals. The owner and host, Stuart, is extremely welcoming and friendly—we felt like family! Dinner was excellent. I had the Sunday roast—marvelous. We chose to eat both nights’ dinners at The Redgarth. Included breakfast was cold—fruit and yogurt and then pastries, cheese and cold cuts—very filling and fresh! We highly recommend this hotel."

"On a dark rainy Friday night I visited Skippers for the first time in a while, I did see an A4 notice full of text on the door but it was lashing rain, dark, I was wearing a mask, my specs were steaming up and I had my hood pulled tight so didn’t stand outside to read it. If I had stood and taken the time to read the notice I wouldn’t be writing this review but that is not really the point here. I entered the shop, used the hand sanitiser and walked up to the order window and placed an order only to be asked if I had phoned. I hadn’t phoned and was told, with no apology, that they were only taking phone orders between 5 and 7pm as they were really busy. I turned to walk out and as I did the owner, in a loud voice, said to his young staff and the one customer in the shop “there goes another one stomping out”. I am not normally a confrontational person but by the time I reached the door I was seeing red after his most unnecessary comment (I consider it a form of harassment). I turned and asked him what he had just said, he replied with something like there is a note on the door, my reply was that I hadn’t been in for a while and had been unaware of the fact and that with an attitude like his I certainly would not be back. I made a suggestion on his Facebook page that he pin a note on it regarding phone orders only 5 to 7 pm my comment/suggestion was deleted without reply or apology. This owner’s attitude to customer relations is non existent and constructive criticism seems lost on him. I will not be back to this establishment but I doubt that the owner really cares."

"Ballater is a beautiful gem of a town tucked in the Cairngorms and well worth a visit. We stayed at the Balmoral Inn which is styled like a hunting fishing lodge with beautiful decor and comfy furniture. The rooms are sumptuous and the bathrooms spacious. Parking is free on the street outside. Reception staff were welcoming and friendly and as soon as we arrived we wished we booked for 2 nights not just 1. The tea coffee making facilities in the rooms included 2 Tunnocks tea cakes and 2 Tunnocks wafers very generous and authentically Scottish. We dined in the restaurant and the meal was delicious, however the young staff could benefit from a bit more training. One of us ordered a starter but the waitress didn’t note this so our mains arrived after 45mins but they offered to bring it as a salad alongside mains which wasn’t ideal. When we ordered a bottle of red wine the waiter brought it and just plonked it on the table leaving the screw cap on, and we requested the bill be split across the 2 rooms but this never happened. Fantastic live music played through dinner and breakfasts were delicious and staff at breakfast were excellent and very efficient and helpful (one of which was waitress from night before so excellent improvement). We played twilight golf at Ballater GC just a few minutes walk up the same road and the course was stunning with incredible views."
