"Our final night in Kirkcudbright ended on a high note, with a sumptuous meal at Auld Alliance. The restaurant is well appointed and has a small but tantalising menu. We received a warm welcome and shortly after being seated, a bottle of water was brought...to the table. My wife chose the Moroccan Vegetable Tagine for her starter. It looked a picture when it arrived and the taste matched the appearance. I ventured for the Salmon Tart, which was equally pretty in appearance and just as much a match in taste. My main course was the Pork Loin, whilst my wife had the Cullen Skink Gratin. Both dishes were a work of art and each mouthful was a flavour explosion on the palate. Cooking at its best. A nice bottle of Chardonnay was an excellent accompaniment. I would have loved to have the Cheeseboard to follow but my meal was so filling that I really needed to have something lighter and therefore enjoyed a delicious Lemon Posset. By contrast, three assorted Galloway Ice Creams went down well with my wife. We had a superb evening, eating fine food, which was beautifully presented and service throughout was exemplary. The only thing I would improve and this is purely my personal taste, is to have much thicker seat pads on the chairs. Many thanks to Will Gill for his fantastic food and his two hard working waitresses, who worked tirelessly throughout. Your restaurant provided the perfect end to our holiday."

we had an excellent eating, and lovely waiting staff and would recommend the auld alliance completely. do not let them be decoded by bizarre and very dated.

We wanted to try The Auld Alliance as the menu looked interesting and it has a good reputation. Our whole experience was spoiled by Red Hot Chile Pipers on a loop playing the likes of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. I’m afraid the droning pipes...was anything other than relaxing and eventually was just irritating and out of place. It detracted significantly from a pleasant meal.

We booked for a Saturday evening as a treat for my Mums birthday, lovely welcome followed by a surprise balloon and banners at our table. We loved the freshly made bread (cajun spiced) and the waitresses where friendly and attentive. I had the Scottish trout...and my mum had the Cullen skink grattan both where absolutely amazing. The restaurant was full and the atmosphere was really nice, very wet we'll definitely be back. Thank you.

we took our staff here for a late Christmas dinner. the dear to the detail of chef will gill and the communication with him regarding our menu was fantastic, he even had christmas cracker for us who was a bonus as it was a fairy! the meal itself was fantastic, appetizers, sweets and sweets had and could just owe nothing. the employees are attentive, the drinks flow and a brilliant night had of us all, we will be very soon again. thank you, tracy and the personal that has brought us to us and prepares us such an amazing evening.

Everything about this restaurant is excellent, (I didnt actually visit the toilets but i'm sure they're great too). The booking was easy and courteous, we hardly got in the door before we were welcomed by the friendly and competent waitress, the timing of each course...was perfect, and the food just amazing, and on hot plates, (not always available everywhere). My husband eats like a snail and he said it was the first time he'd ever got to the last bite while it was still warm. Unfortunately we don't come to Galloway as often as we'd like but we're now regulars at the Auld Alliance when we do.

As we entered the picturesquely quaint, small town of Kirkcudbright, my mum and I felt right at home. This was reflected by the stellar reception and personal, warm welcome of both the staff and chef of this wonderfully cute, little restaurant. Our order was taken,...prepared and served quickly. Enough time for a nice chat and to get comfy. The food itself would easily put a number of luxury restaurants I've experienced to shame. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, and it was absolutely delicious. Thank you Will and staff for a wonderful evening in your cozy and comfortable establishment. We will return. Highly recommended.

that was a first-class experience. not obvious at once when we went up a narrow staircase that was a good one to try too much of the wine list. but everything after that was good. waitresses we are young, but very friendly and enthusiastic about the food. they felt part of the company, not separated, as waiting employees can sometimes be. we were pampered for the choice in the menu and divided two fish starters ,salmon disguised especially for the quality of the baked. we had both trout for net and the mix between the fish, the salsa and fennel was perfectly balanced and fresh. I followed with a skyy soufflé bursting with taste. this chef knows how to cook and how to guide a high quality fac...

"My wife found this when looking for a place for us to spend our wedding anniversary. It sounded good on paper. It was a long and tedious drive for us though and I wasn’t sure it was worth it. I was totally wrong! This place is superb and well worth any drive! The setting is great-it has its own beach and there is a small patio where you can sit and there is a heater there too if you need it. There’s a nice lawn in front of the hotel too where those with dogs took them for a walk. The rooms are all different and all well appointed with their own en suite. The costs of the rooms reflects the size of the room and not the facilities. If you are tall like me (6ft 2) I wouldn’t go for one of the rooms in the roof as the coomb ceiling is a pain. However the thing you go there for is the food and that is sublime! It is a set menu in the evening which reduces waste and helps control costs. You get 7 courses, all quite small , but at the end of the meal you are adequately fed but not full. We were there for 3 nights and had a different meal every night. All the dishes were superb but we had mushroom soup one night and it was the best soup I have ever tasted! In fact it was one of the best foods I have ever tasted! The breakfast is very good indeed and you can order whatever you like from the menu which is very comprehensive. I found that set me up for the whole day and I didn’t need a lunch. I must also mention the wine. The wine list is very comprehensive with some difficult to come by wines in it too like Chateau Musar. On 2 nights we went with the wine pairing list which I thought was very good value, especially the cheaper of the 2 lists we had every night. The hotel is a good centre for seeing things in the local area and , despite going in November we found things to occupy ourselves for the 3 days we were there. They have various themed weekends too which sound brilliant. But the hotel is so good it is worth going to anytime. We will certainly be back."
