"Pleasant but young and inexperienced waiting staff. First course was beautifully presented but lacked flavour. It would have been better served with some bread and I asked for some. Main course of chicken Miso was disappointing. Although the chicken was cooked well, there was no flavour of miso and too much pesto and an unpalatable pink sauce, together with hummus and bitter leaves. Potatoes also in pesto. Lots of strong flavours crowding out each other. Dessert was fine but unremarkable. The white wine was undrinkable and I sent the bottle back and asked to choose another. It was just as awful as the first bottle. The Wine Manager came to the table and suggested I try wine by the glass to see if I liked it. I got the impression she felt I was being awkward. I agreed and chose one. She brought me a 2cm sample. It was reasonable and I said I yes, that 's fine, thanks, I 'll have a glass of that and she said Are you sure? and I said I 've just said it 's fine . Her response was a sarcastic Is that a bottle or a glass ? I asked again for a glass of that wine. Her manner was unprofessional, arrogant and rude. This lunch was for a special occasion and the whole experience was dreadful. We were dining in a spacious room with an attractive log fire, which was lit as we sat down but quickly went out and was just left. There were about 3 other tables occupied in that large room and it lacked ambience. The lunch came to just over £120. At £60 per head for lunch I expected better. I will not be recommending this restaurant."

the frying menu is amazing: large part of fish, meat or a beautiful filled vegetarian puff packet plus a lot of roasted potato and a lot of sweets. also the desserts like panna cotta are great. it can be a bit loud and as the tables are wide, they need to focus to understand the people who sit opposite them. The staff were great, very attentive but not overly so and they dealt with my request for a well lit table. The food was delicious. Only very slight downside was that my husband’s legs were a bit squashed in between the narrow table legs but we’ll just ask for an alternative table type next time as there are wider ones. All in all we had wonderful meal and will definitely be returning.

We stopped here randomly on our way down from Peterborough to Chelmsford after spotting it on TripAdvisor. Straight away, we were pleasantly surprised by the attentiveness, friendliness and care of the staff. The menu is simple (which is a good thing in my opinion) but the variety is exciting and we found the food to be excellent quality and great value for money. We would definitely go again if in the area!

"Despite one of the photos, the Deli is no longer a sit down eatery. It has a modest (but well chosen selection of cheeses and other deli foods all prepackaged, not portioned to order plus a kitchen that makes hot and cold take away foods. There are some reasonably nice breads, although not sliced. They will reheat their pizzas (etc. to order. Which cooked foods they have at any given lunchtime seems a bit random. You might find (rather good pizza one day, Spanish omelette another, and so on. You can usually rely on some kind of salad being available too. That 's just one part of the Deli, though. The two other main parts have gourmet sweets, snacks and cooking ingredients, and housewares. But I need to address the elephant in the room, which always needs a big label. And on it is written: PRICE! EVERYTHING in the Deli is expensive. Don 't even think of going in if you aren 't comforably well off. It seems aimed at customers who would happily get their groceries in Fortnum Mason, if it were not so inconveniently far away. A hot takeaway snack or salad will set you back £7 8. A confectionary bar, £5 or more. Homewares are firmly in the Fancy Christmas gift price bracket for most people. This is why they lose a point on the score. What they sell is excellent, but to my mind is (shall we say? cheekily priced. Now, to be fair: if you want to pay Tesco prices, walk to Tesco, a short distance away. The Deli probably isn 't for you. I just don 't want someone to make a long trip, only to turn back when they see their lunch wouldn 't be much less expensive if they ordered at a local restaurant. Having said all of this, one thing you 'll never complain about at the Shelford Deli is service. The staff are uniformly lovely, and will go out of their way to help in any way they can. Arguably, this goes with the luxury bracket, but it 's genuine, not forced, and very nice to see."
