"We decided to revisit The George in Wedmore for dinner after a long break due to past poor experiences. The food was good and reasonably priced. The (young and virtually untrained) staff tried their best. The general atmosphere was only partly welcoming flowers and...candles on the tables, due to the large open fire, remaining unlit on a wet, cold February night .Interestingly in a neighbouring room, we discovered that the diners had lit the fire for themselves!! All was going ok until we asked for a bottle of white wine which arrived warm. A big ice bucket full of ice and water was provided which when we poured the wine then proceeded to drip water everywhere. The next problem was they had run out of wine glasses......and offered us champagne flutes which we declined! It then took the waiting staff ten minutes to beg some wine glasses from the neighbouring Indian restaurant. If there had been a wedding reception for 100 people taking place at the George I perhaps could have understood this but no, it was just a moderately busy Saturday night. Neighbouring tables who were drinking wine by the glass had to finish there glasses so that they could be then refilled. Then there was the fact that 3 out of the four tables in our room did not have salt and pepper provided and each table without them when their meals arrived had to request them. Also the menus did not tell you what was provided with the dishes eg did the lamb burger come with salad and chips? The young staff were willing but the odds were stacked against them. All of these things would be easily resolved with staff training, better written menus and purchasing some glasses and then our experience would have been so much better. Instead I'm afraid we won't be rushing back and when friends asked how it was I'm afraid we could only recommend the food! and not the experience"

poor service and lack of attention from the employees. eating was bland and uninvited. manager could not take less care to ensure that customers are well served and enjoy their stay.

Had a family meal one night and a family post funeral meal the next day. Staff very attentive and the meal the night before was freshly cooked and tasty. Would recommend mixed grille and cheese board was as good as I’ve ever had.

I would have thought that if the advertising food until 9 o'clock they would not say that the kitchen was closed at 8:35. very disappointed when I had eaten here in the past, it was good. it is not surprising that the pubs see themselves closing when they do not gunst themselves. by turning off the business, but claiming to have food available. Come on, pull your socks up!

This was a spontaneous visit for first time in years. The “new ownership” sign attracted us in as although we had been before, there was a degree of uncertainty as to what one would find. Started with coffee, checked menu, took the plunge! Piri-Piri plaice...a good choice. Served enthusiastically by young staff, nothing too much trouble. Really good, we will be back and often.......

Re-visited The George upon change of ownership; things are on the up. A pleasant evening, with good food, reasonably priced, with traditional pub favourites mixed in with a few more adventurous offerings. In need of a landlord' although the young staff are willing and enthusiastic....A decent selection of beer and LARGER (their spelling) Some investment needed in the decor especially the lighting. Will happily return.

Celebrating our daughters birthday we booked for 4pm when the busy lunch time had passed. We had a pre drink at the bar and the staff are always very welcoming they told us our table was ready but we could sit down any time we...where ready no rushing at all. We had a very nice starter, Pate is lovely and the Sunday lunch was amazing and fresh even at that time late afternoon and the staff where friendly and attentive, after dinner we moved back to the bar for coffee on the comfortable sofa. Just one tiny disappointment that the fire wasn’t on that’s all. Well recommended

My wife and I stayed in Bedroom 4. It looked great when we first arrived and the bed was comfortable and the facilities were fine. Unfortunately the bells of the nearby church clock (less than a hundred yards away) rang every quarter hour and continued...throughout the night. I had the most appalling night's sleep as a consequence. Surely the church wardens can be approached to arrange for the bells to be silenced overnight (perhaps from midnight until 5 am). Alternatively some form of secondary glazing to the windows might improve the situation. Rooms 4 5 are linked by a door (lockable from both sides) presumably intended to enable the rooms to be used as a family suite).Unfortunately howev...

"Been wanting to try this ‘alternative’ pub for a while. Large car park with plenty of space, no steps or slopes into the bar. Access for buggies, wheelchairs etc should be okay, my mother walks with the aid of a frame and has no issues. Inside the decor is certainly alternative but in a great way, loved it! Plenty to look at, keep you entertained and talk about as you wait for your food or just pass the time. Staff were friendly and welcoming, there was just one guy running the bar, taking food orders and bringing food out; I thought he needed a helper or coworker really. There is a decent bar area with seating or there is more ‘restaurant’ style seating further back beyond the bar. We chose to sit in the bar area seating which is a mixture of booth and chairs. Dogs are allowed in which is great, there is free Wi-Fi which is good as my mobile signal was very poor. The menu is standard pub food, quite a bit of choice and plenty of options for gluten free. I chose to have the fillet steak cooked medium, I had a starter of garlic bread but chose for it all to come out together. Mother had beef brisket loaded fries, the portion was massive so I had to help her finish it. The steak was perfectly cooked, I chose to have the peppercorn sauce; this was a bit watery and bland. The steak comes with chunky chips, peas, mushrooms, tomatoes and onion rings. For dessert I had the nutty apple crumble with ice cream, it was okay. Overall this is a great venue with acceptable food, friendly staff and awesome decor that will keep you talking and looking all night. Based on this experience I would visit again."
