"Update October 2023 We were back in the area so dropped in to see how our former village local was faring. Very, very busy for an early afternoon or maybe that 's the way it is now. Beer still good but wine, I thought, was expensive. Wouldn 't call it a village local anymore, more of a roadside restaurant that sells beer. Obviously popular but not as welcoming as it used to be. I doubt if any of the barstaff would ever find time, or the inclination, to chat, which somehow is a marker for a real village pub. Original comment 2021 Was checking to see who would be running the the Ridley Arms now that SJF have sold on to another concern. The Ridley Arms used to be our local many years ago when we lived at Shotton. We were there when Whitbread gave up the lease and SJF took over. The night of the auction when everything including the floor was auctioned off was a night never to forget and raised a lot of money for the village school. Thanks of course that night must go to Mickey Dungait who must rank as the best auctioneer ever to have lived. He could certainly sell snow to Eskimos and was also the star of the annual leek show. Sadly in my opinion the Ridley was unnecessarily tarted up but credit to the new manager, of the day, the choice of real ale and quality of such was excellent. Unfortunately not allowing the locals to stand at the bar was, in my opinion, a big mistake and not in keeping with the notion of the village local . Sadly we felt the Ridley became a restaurant that sold beer, albeit, very good beer, rather than the village boozer that sold food. Now that a new company has taken over from SJF it will be interesting to see what the future holds. I will definitely visit when next in the most fantastic county that is Northumberland! I hadn’t visited the Ridley Arms for quite some time, but on our way back, we decided to stop in for a late Sunday meal. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. There was no cutlery on our table, and we had to wait a considerable amount of time after our meals arrived to be provided with some. I also requested a water bowl for the dog, but this was never brought over. The food itself was of poor quality; it was cold and undercooked, with the vegetables being almost raw. My partner ordered the ham, which was excessively fatty and left him unable to finish his meal. To add to this, the staff did not return to clear our plates, leaving us feeling quite dissatisfied. Overall, it wa...

"Yesterday evening the 2nd February my wife and her friends visited this establishment. There were 4 of them in total. I asked my wife if she could bring me home a chicken gyros after her meal as I love the Greek gyros. On returning home I enquired as to how her meal was. In response she said “it was not only the worst Greek food she’d had, it was the worst food she’d ever eaten” . That’s saying something as we visit Greece at least once a year and love authentic Greek cuisine. She explained that the starters were poorly prepared and ‘a strange combination of ingredients’ . The main course for all 4 of them was over cooked and dry to the point all them left their food and when asked by the waitress if everything was okay ? the response was an emphatic no, to which a a mumbled response was given but no offer of an apology or reduction in the bill. Looking forward to my gyros and hoping it was better than my wife and her friends experience I was sadly disappointed. There was a total of roughly 4 greasy, soggy chips. Roughly 5 or 6 small dried out chicken pieces and the salad looked at least 2 days old and also dried out which went straight in the bin.The pita bread was okay though. The reason I’m writing this and not my wife is she doesn’t like confrontation but I feel restaurants should be held accountable for poor food and service. You would think in this present economical climate restaurants would be making every effort to give a good service when finances are tight, after all you need repeat customers. My wife and her friends paid over £120 for an extremely sub standard experience and then paid £7.50 for an extremely sub standard gyros which went into the bin. I decided to share a photo of my £7.50 gyros. I’m also more than willing to speak in person to the owner, chef if they’re happy to."
