"Having successfully completed a major project I took my team out as a small thank you. There were 5 of us and we arrived around 1030h for breakfast. We were greeted by the very .lovely Amy, who promptly seated us. She was polite, friendly and attentive. She took our drinks orders, then our breakfasts. We all opetd for the full Scottish at under a tenner each. The meal was fabulous, well cooked, piping hot and presented on high quality flatware with good cutlery. The sausages had a delicious crisp outer, the bacon was well done but not hard, the mushrooms were served in a wee bowl with chilli oil. The eggs were perfect, accompanied by a slice of chunky bread, haggis and black pudding. Beans finished it off brilliantly. The teapot was quirky and delightful. Alison, the owner was not only beautiful but very charming with it. She was involved in the serving of our meals and chatted to us as she served us, making us feel more than welcome. Five breakfasts with assorted lattes, cappuccinos and teas was under £70 so very reasonably priced too. I left a well deserved tip and Alison kindly let me know that the full tip always went to the serving staff, so very ethical too. My colleagues were all as suitably impressed as I was. I cannot recommend this place highly enough and the only shame is that my time in Bonnyrigg is over, and I dearly wished I'd found The Beetroot sooner."

"We visited the recently refurbished reopened Craigie Hotel for lunch over the festive period with a group of friends. The day didn 't get off to a good start when the waiting staff couldn 't locate our lunch reservation. However, these things happen so we waited whilst they arranged a table. And waitied....... and waited......... Eventually, some 30 minutes later, we were informed by someone who appeared to be management that a table was available. Once seated, drinks orders were taken and quickly delivered to the table. The earlier wait was beginning to seem like a distant memory already. However... once the young member of staff began to distribute drinks, it soon became apparent that the order bore little resemblance to what was expected by our party. Beers were bottled instead of draught, wine was red instead of white. Ice was served in drinks when it was specifically requested without. Drinks returned, it took a further 15 minutes before everyone seated actually had what they had asked for. Things can only get better now right? Wrong. The food was a disgrace for a hotel which masquerades as a venue nearer the upper end of the taste and class scale. The sandwiches were reminiscent of a 4am hotel room service snack both in presentation and taste, and the salads looked like they had been plucked from the 'whoops ' section of a supermarket aisle. By this time enough was enough, and a member of our group spoke with a manager. However, despite detailing our disappointments at what had been a very below par service, the 'manager ' offered no explanation and seemed very condescending. Given our spend, I found this astonishing that someone employed in the service industry could behave in this manner. I will be taking this up in writing with the hotel GM at the earliest opportunity. Needless to say, my friend and his wife who were on the verge of booking their summer wedding at this venue have now categorically ruled it out. I would suggest anyone considering the Craigie for lunch, dinner or a wedding reception consider their options very carefully."

"We were extremely disappointed with our experience at the restaurant last night. We had family visiting and had made a reservation for Friday evening for 4 adults and a baby. Upon arrival, there was no one to greet us and show us to our table. We had to search for it ourselves and found our name and reservation time on the table. Despite requesting a highchair when booking, one was not prepared at the table. Due to a busy bar, we decided to order food and drinks through the QR code/app instead of waiting in line. However, the drinks took a long time to arrive, as did the food. The portion sizes were small, with not enough scampi or chips on our plates. The chips had no taste at all. The side of roasted vegetables we ordered with the pie was disappointingly small for the price. The burgers were average, and we were disappointed that they no longer offered the delicious crispy buttermilk chicken burgers. One of us had paid extra for sweet potato fries but received normal chips instead. It took multiple reminders to the waitress to receive the correct order, which arrived nearly half an hour later when we had already finished our meal. The service was subpar and lacked attention to detail. Despite being busy and understaffed, a good restaurant should prioritize customer satisfaction and address any issues promptly. We were also surprised that the app prompted us to tip before receiving any service or food. Overall, our experience was disappointing and we will not be returning. The restaurant used to be good, but it is now poorly managed and lacks consideration for its customers."

"We ordered a takeaway for collection, customer service was fab and the food was ready within 15minutes. Since the orchid was taken over by new owners I haven’t been able to find a chinese in Midlothian that serves the same crispy shredded honey chilli chicken/beef! The dark colour with sesame seeds, sticky sauce with lots of honey and Garlic. I’ve come across Other places out with Midlothian but not ideal when you live here. We thought we’d order It and give it a try, also ordered chicken curry, boiled rice, salt and chilli chips and chow mien. The chow mien is greasy but really tasty. It looked great but once you start to tuck in you realise there’s more bean sprouts than noodles and that sort of ruins it for me personally. The chicken curry is pretty watered down flavour wise, not the best curry to be honest but it was okay. Salt and chilli chips were okay, tasted more of 5spice rather than that chilli and garlic taste I’ve had in most other places and there wasn’t the usual onions and chillis through them. Chips were crispy though which was nice! The rice is rice, done the job. And the crispy honey chilli shredded chicken was not crispy, it was soggy, large chunks so not shredded and tasted like a sweet and sour sauce which is like an orange red colour. The food was okay, I mean we ate it! But just nothing to write home about. The search for some decent crispy shredded honey chilli chicken continues......."
