"A Saturday in mid March. A group of 6 of us had a look in for a drink and a bite of lunch. There were other customers in so there was a bit of atmosphere but it certainly didn’t seem overly busy. We got a seat, bought a beer, and perused the lunchtime menu. Then it got interesting there was much confusion between the bar and kitchen staff as to which items on the menu were available or not. Orders were placed and had to be changed when it became apparent they didn’t have to basic ingredients/foodstuffs to make them. When our “baguettes” arrived they were just bread buns. A beef and onion bun lacked onion. Similarly, pork and apple lacked apple. On speaking with staff they seemed particularly exasperated with things. They explained that the landlady had recently opened a cafe 4 doors up and rather than being organised and order foodstuffs for the cafe, she was merely raiding the kitchens at this pub leaving the stock depleted and not communicating this fact. This situation was not the fault of the kitchen or bar staff who seemed frustrated at it all. The place was just badly managed, had an air of chaos, and produced “baguettes” that weren’t and were missing items. Seems that the landlady should start running the place properly. Her staff certainly weren’t impressed!! Oh, and the ‘inspirational’ and ‘funny’ quotes written on the walls with thick black marker pen (with bad grammar) are just naff! Would we recommend the place. Nope. Would we go back again. Nope."

"We arrived soaking wet during a heavy rainfall and after I enquired regarding the availability of a table was answered by a petite dark haired woman (a member of staff who needs customer focused training), who informed me in an extremely curt and abrupt manner that, “if you notice I am about to clear and clean that table.” I hadn’t noticed and as she didn’t have any cleaning materials in her hand at the time was rather confused, up but we waited patiently whilst she eventually cleared and cleaned. Later the same member of staff came to take our order, again in a curt manner. When she returned with an incorrect order her reaction was that it was our fault that she had confused the order and she flounced off without a word of apology. Another member of staff delivered our tea cakes and then our coffees arrived and were again delivered by the original member of staff with what I can only describe as a reluctant and irritated manner. Maybe we were treated like this as the norm for that particular member of staff, maybe she had an ‘off day’ or was it because we were ignorant southerners who did not understand the ordering/paying system? Why the original member of staff bothers to work in the cafe is bizarre if she dislikes visitors and/or waiting at table? Maybe a job working behind the scenes would be more suitable for her? Whatever the reason for her manner it left a nasty taste in our mouths!"

"We stayed in the kariega room for our second visit to this beautiful boutique hotel in the Yorkshire dales. It was lovely to be welcomed with fizz and home made cookies , however we both felt our welcome was nowhere near as warm as our last visit. Maybe this was down to covid restrictions??The room was absolutely divine and out shone the St Jean room we had stayed it last time . Sitting in the hot tub next to the river was definitely the icing on the cake. Such gorgeous views. Dinner again didn’t seem quite as special as on our last visit. No canapés offered. The staff were keen for us to go straight to our table rather than peruse the menu in the lounge. Again I think this is all to do with covid restrictions. The meal was totally divine and service especially from the super friendly maitre d was great . We did have difficulties hearing what the waitress was saying masks and visors don’t help at all but again not her fault. She was lovely. We thought that having a smaller menu may mean we would struggle, but there is certainly something for everyone. My halibut was the star of the show !We had a wonderful relaxing time in the hot tub following dinner and the best nights sleep ever . Neither of us wanted to wake but we were actually excited about breakfast. This is where we felt let down... two serving staff in the dining room obviously wasn’t enough . They were doing their best to look after everyone but it was difficult to get any attention. We wanted juice replenishment it never appeared. Neither did the tea we asked for. Food was lovely but waiting 35minutes for yoghurt then another 20+ after this for hot food did seem a lot. We then felt in a rush to check out. We do love Yorebridge and wouldn’t hesitate to return, but possibly only if Ion the deal that we paid for. Almost £400 for one nights stay when it seems to be lacking that special touch we felt in our last visit.... it’s too much . Service from the staff we dealt with was great, however at the price’s yorebridge charge for a stay, I don’t believe guests should have a hefty service charge added to their bills. Surely this should be included?"
