"What really stands out about this restaurant is the combination of imagination and simplicity. We went on one evening, on the recommendation of the daughter of one of us, and were so impressed that we came back the following evening. I began with the cauliflower gazpacho, which came with roasted salted almonds. The soup was an absolute surprise, with intense contrasting and extremely fresh flavours, sour, spicy and creamy at the same time. The wine pairing, a Macon Blanc, was equally superb, and in any case is one of my favourite wines. I followed it with the baked aubergine, which combined the delicious softness of slow roasted aubergine with a grilled crust of crushed peanuts, caramelised onions and spices; it came with a rich tomato sauce and some of the most delectable round squashes or zucchinis I have ever tasted. The dessert was a dark red chizo sorbet, with a caramel sauce to offset the whiteness and biscuit. The sorbet was deliciousness itself. I followed it with a Williams pear schnapps, from a producer in the Pfalz (I think) - there was an extraordinary range, including a quince schnapps, if ever I return. The next day I had quail egg in a brioche with caramelized onions; some extremely light parmesan dumplings with spinach and a rather unobtrusive truffle sauce and a beautifully arranged strawberry, white chocolate and blackberry dish on a long thin biscuit, like a plate. The service was good, attentive, and we talked to the chef, who was extremely relaxed - always the mark of a good chef. The restaurant, as everyone knows, is almost impossible to find without directions. One has to go down an alley beween the Westin hotel and the comic opera, round past the dustbins, into a spooky area that looks as if it could come from the Third Man, up some iron steps and then ring a bell. The restaurant, up a long flight of steps, is cosy and full of interesting people..."
